Does this seem like a common shop practice?

A few months ago I mentioned hearing a noise when driving to the shop that did my alignment, and they found my muffler heat shield had fallen so they put it back up with screws. However, they used sheet metal screws right into the tub. They go all the way through and have now put holes in my carpet and now in my weather tech floor mats. Luckily nobody has gotten hurt from the sharp end sticking out.

Am I wrong to think this is messed up? It’s not a huge deal for me because my carpet isn’t too nice but it still seems wrong. My family always goes to this shop and is on good terms with the owner and I don’t think they’ve ever had issues. I am going to be bringing my spare wheel to be mounted and balanced soon so I’ll mention it to the owner while I’m there

There are bolts with washers but it appears over time the area around the washer has worn which made it fall down. It seems like it would have been just as easy to put larger washers which would not have hurt anything.

Luckily the spot they drilled through was already rusty but still not happy about it

Old trusted shops have new unreliable staff sometimes! lucky its a TJ you can just grind them off and forget about it, Like @WallyWest said its something I would have done for a quick fix then went oh fuck when they came through the mats,

I am diligently working to improve my work ethic and standards so hopefully some day before I die I will be able to achieve a level that is almost that good. Lofty goal I am sure but what are we if we don't have goals? In fact, given that I need so much practice, next time you're in the neighborhood, stop on by and we can demonstrate some skills on yours.

I work in a mom & pop shop. This place is 100% reputation. The problem is, you gotta hire people. Sometimes those people have different standards than you and pull sh*t like this. They think they can get away with it, but it A L W A Y S comes back around to bite them...

Hopefully before they screw up something really expensive or hurt someone.

about to replace that heat shield. Mine is pretty worn and summit has the OEM one in stock.

There's a much better way to rig it even if you don't have the OEM hardware. I'd definitely bring it to the owner's attention because that's just shoddy & they deserve to know the quality of work that comes out of their shop.

That is well below average, and not something I'd expect or accept from a place I paid to do proper repairs. I'd definitely take it back and go up the ladder to the management/ownership to make it right.

If I found out one of my guys did that, I would beat him and roll his box right out of the shop. There is no excuse for that.
