Dyno Testing Bolt-ons On The 4.0

Not well, but I did find a tear in my boot that's about an inch long. I still haven't fixed that. Probably need to add it to the to-do list.

When you replace the shifter boot; check the retaining bolts for the shifter assembly.
While I was replacing the shifter boot on my ‘01 I found the shifter bolts very loose.
Tightening the bolts and replacing the inner shifter boot solved the gear lube odor I would smell on hot days.

We need a HP Tuners group so we can spread out the cost.

Spread it out how? You mean buy 1 MPVI3 & share it in the group?

The tune if you buy one like from FRP isn't going to work on everyone's 4.0 unless they are exactly the same.. And then you're just getting a canned tune & not a custom one.

I've dealt with canned tunes before, it's not a big deal.

For all us stock EFI folks , all we have is the factory Canned tune ....

I think it's been shown that even on a stock 4.0 doing a custom tune can gain some power but I might not be remembering it correctly.

On the Dodge Magnum V-8's doing a custom tune on a stock engine helped.... But I haven't had a stock engine since 2006.

The three things a tuner would get me, I hope, would be a little better gas mileage, adjust the charge voltage for my AGM battery (really needs 14.3v or so), and decrease the sensitivity of the PCM for sensors.

@Jezza Your CAI and windstar testing has changed my mind on that front, so thanks. The K&N dirt and dust management has always been my biggest concern seeing how much dust we see on the trail and in early days I'd always viewed it as a low roi mod. I'm trying to manage in cabin noise so I'm not going to go the windstar route, but I've ordered one in the traditional location. I'd considered a higer flowing, but non-K&N alternative for the stock filter. I've been doing some light mods on my 04 4.0 with some 1.7 roller rockers, short headers and a 62mm throttle body with an eye on bigger future mods and have been thinking it's a good time to do a dyno run as is. On the street I've seen a notable measurable improvement. Swapping a CAI is pretty quick so I should be able to do both in a session.

On that front one of the annoying lmitations with the tuning on the 4.0 and JTEC+ is the lack of MAF data. I have a pro-link with my HPTuners with my wideband O2 currently routed into it. Does anyone have a good standalone MAF sensor option that can be fed into HPT even if the data is voltage only?

On a stock air box, the airflow is up through the filter allowing larger particles to fall to the bottom of the airbox. The oiled K&N traps that dust and clogs much quicker. Gave up on K&Ns for off road use years ago. Non dusty environments they seem to work well.

I've consistently seen independent tests show modern catalytic converters (mid-90s and onward) only affect power by 1-3 hp and on most engine dynos that's within the margin of error and less than the fan, AC, alternator and maybe even the water pump. We didn't have it figured out in the 70s and 80s, but that was only part of the restriction in the systems of that era.

My wife and I were cruising a back road in the mountains and passed an old CJ2 or CJ3 and she commented about the smell. Heresy warning. Even if I had a pre-cat era car now, I'd think about installing a modern converter if viable just to not have that exhaust stink. Lots of compact configurations are available. I used to reek of exhaust after taking my old Fiat 850 spider or Honda CB750 out and personally don't really have a positive nostalgic feeling towards that aspect of those vehicles, fun as they were.

If your Carb'd CB750 exhaust reeked, the tuner didn't understand. They didn't reek when stock and if jetted and tuned properly they still don't.

If you buy the Credits then the next time we meet up you can use my MPVIC2+ if you want to play with things. If you're going to try messing with the fuel and timing you'd want to print the original settings off first.
You can download the software for free from HPTuners website.
