Early TJ Exhaust Manifold Recommendations

If I remember correctly, the early model from Banks is fixed.

Ahhh, I can't comment on the early model, you're right. Upon reading this again, mine were the later model ones, so my previous statement doesn't hold much merit now.

I ran the Dorman with the flex joints and it cracked in about a year. Im running the Stainless ATP Manifold and it just started ticking again so I know its starting to crack. Its been just over a year. Im hoping to be able to have the money for the American Racing Header by this fall and will switch to that. So far my experience is that they all crack. even with the flex joints.

My '97 TJ's replacement header with expansion joints the dealer installed under warranty in 1999 never cracked. It was still fine the day it was stolen 13 years later.

Well this seems to be the best testament. Had i known this i likely would have ponied up the extra money when i changed mine.

When I changed mine and disconnected the mid pipe from the manifold the mid pipe pulled all the way against the oil pan. Essentially the mid pipe was putting undue force on the manifold, let alone when the engine torques and puts even more on the manifold. I pulled my mid pipe, used a piece of wood and bottle jack to get the pipe to line up better. Not sayin that this will work,,, only time will tell.

So... started on the all the repairs to the 99 TJ & it looks like I need to replace the exhaust manifold (along with a plethora of other parts) & was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the ECCPP manifold listed HuskerJeep (OP's) first post?

It seems to get decent review on amazon & on Ebay but was looking for someone that might have real life experiance with it on hear???

I keep reading the Good / Bad / & the Ugly about people having issues no matter which one they use... this one is half the price of the others.... Your Thoughts???

ECCPP "OEM Style" Replacement ($87, 1-year warranty - link was provided by @Jerry Bransford, although I couldn't tell if he used this one specifically)

Any updates on your experience with the eccpp?

LadyD... wound up not needing it after all... The manifold was salvageable. The bolt flange to the down pipe had become disconnected, so a little clean up & a little welding & we put it back together.

Sorry can give you any insight on that unit.

Any update here or new products out? I have manifold with flex joints on 1 and 6 but all of my cracks are taking place near the flange. I brazed up what I could get to and hit the others with JB Weld Extreme Heat. I know I am going to have to replace eventually. Probably going to see if muffler shop can put a piece of flex behind the flange. I am inclined to go with the Dorman. Any input appreciated!

I went with Dorman on my 4.0 automatic. Lifetime warranty and my mechanic said I wouldn’t have to pay labor if it failed.

Yes, the fix is installing a good quality header with flexible steel flex joints at both sides like this one. They're all over Amazon.com and eBay, most have favorable reviews but that's the key to making a good decision, reading the reviews thoroughly and concentrating on the one star reviews to find the real truth.

Should look like this... notice the steel accordion-like flex joints which the original early factory header did not have. They're what was added to stop the cracking caused by the headers being flexed by engine torque.

Hey Jerry, I always value your feedback.
My next project will be my exhaust, I'm thinking.
Gathering info at this point, but my goal is to replace the entire system manifold back.
I know I want to go with a header and cat-back system all in stainless.
Do you have any recommendations towards a whole system?
1997 2.5, no AC, 5 speed, if that makes any difference.
Thanks
Tray

.

There are not a lot of options when it come to exhaust manifolds for the 2.5, the cast iron OEM type aftermarket manifolds do not fit properly because there are casting issues and the capped outlets (for the YJ 2.5 O2 sensors) tend to fail rather quickly. Banks is one of the few (oem pattern) headers without quality concerns, I've been using an Ebay special SS chinese header (also oem pattern) with good results since 2017 and I could buy 4 of them for the same cost as Banks, not that I like replacing them but it has worked without any issues. As far as the exhaust system is concerned Magna Flow's SS systems are hard to beat.

That's the best review I have seen so far.

If the dealer installed it, I assumed they must have used their own revised MOPAR manifold? If so, that would answer the question what the difference is between the $425 Mopar exhaust manifold and the typical Dorman/Amazon/Ebay $100 manifold.

Just like anything else, I suppose you only get what you pay for.
