You ever have one of those months where nothing seems to go right?
It all started in the North Georgia mountains a month ago. I was out on a Sunday drive when the bolts holding my u-joint on the front drive shaft sheared of resulting in a bent drive shaft. Nothing that has to be fixed automatically so I decided to go ahead with my plans to convert my rear brake drums over to disc and get the drive shaft repaired at the end of the month. The brakes worked perfectly.
About a week later my transmission starts making very loud grinding noises when I let off the throttle. So I decided it was time to change the fluid in it and since I was doing that I might as well change them all. I started with the axles, engine, then transfer case saving the trans for last and the first thing I notice is metal. Not good.Time to yank it out and get it rebuilt before it gets any more damaged and while its out put a new clutch kit in.
A week later I get it back and installed and take it for a test drive. The first thing I notice is the trans noise is gone but now I have two new noises. A faint grinding noise coming from the rear and my exhaust manifold had decide to crack in two spots while the trans was out. I figured the grinding noise likely had something to do with the brake conversion because I had never noticed it before then. Boy was I wrong. Pinion bearings had gone bad. I wound up replacing all the bearings and seals in it whether they were bad or not, and finally today I installed a new exhaust manifold. Now I am ready to go riding again. Crap I still need a front axle.
