Facebook is great when applied to the real world. It has steered me towards so many great events, gatherings, adventures, and dates.

Once upon a time I did, until I realized how toxic Facebook is, and how it's systematically destroying people's social lives and the internet as a whole. Now I won't touch it and never will again. I'm 110% done with any form of social media.

I am very, very passionate about how strongly I dislike Facebook.

Right there with u!

Aren’t you the admin of five Jeep owner groups?

For what it’s worth, someone from this group took the logo that I designed (what I use as my avatar) and used it for their Facebook profile picture. I’m kind of torn between being upset and flattered. :)

Was, not anymore. Well, not technically. When I deleted all the content from my FB profile, I had to keep the bare bones FB profile laying around because someone offered to take over those groups for me and made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I'm waiting for them to come through so I can transfer over ownership of the groups to them.

Nice!

Is there any way to monetize that?

@Serbonze man that sucks

I have a friend who has a youtube channel and does vlog with it. Recently someone started copying his videos and posting them on their own channel as if it was their own video.

I actually have that logo copyrighted. :)

To some degree, you could use a VigLink account and share links that way. The problem I found is that most people on Facebook aren't willing to click links or go outside of Facebook. Seems, hard to believe, huh? It seems true from my findings though. You'd actually be better at monetizing a YouTube channel, since you can automate the ads and it's entirely effortless. Facebook you have to manually post those ads yourself, which can get tiresome!

Ultimately those groups is why I ended up leaving Facebook. It's nothing at all like running a forum, not even one bit. I've never seen so much drama in my entire life... And you'd think, how could that come from a Jeep group? People on there get so pissy when they see the same questions over-and-over again, they curse at each other left and right, etc. It's absolutely crazy how much people overreact on those groups.

I'm not sure why it's so much different from a forum in that regard, but I think it has to do with the whole social media aspect of it (since it's social media first, and a group second). Not only that, the amount of spammers and trying to manage that was a hassle. Opening up my Facebook every day and having 100 new group requests a day... It's just exhausting to say the least.

I also didn't like the fact that any information you post in those groups can only be found by other people with Facebook who have access to the group. It's not like a forum, where anything you post here will be able to be found in Google, by anyone in the world, even if they have a forum account or not. So I like the idea of building something that everyone has access too, as this sort of information on forums like these can be very helpful to others down the road.

I feel like Facebook dehumanizes people somehow. There is some quality "shit posting" on Twitter, but on Facebook it seems like just a mess.

I don't have a Facebook, but my fiance does and sometimes I watch her scroll through her stuff and it really is mind numbing. It is a very self absorbed platform, so it's not hard to believe that getting a ton of typical users together will end in "only I can be right" and "muh feelings".

That's not to say that those people are like that IRL, though I'm sure enough are given the current social climate, but Facebook really is some sort of social anomaly.

I thought about creating an Instagram account as a visual record of my TJ's journey, but it just feels uncomfortable or not natural because of all the selfishness and self absorbtion you see on it. I've never claimed to know a bunch about people, but people are the reason I don't care to know lol.

I think forums in general are different because we are all here for one specific thing, and it's a small community. I'm sure if some form of cancer showed up and started poisoning the water it would be dealt with swiftly. When you don't have that sort of control on social media platforms, people aren't bound to their actions. They can get away with treating someone poorly because of a bad day at work or whatever.

I am 100% for freedom of speech, just not unconstructive irrelevant shit posting with the sole purpose of being a jerk. I am just as opposed to the other side trying to censor things left and right because they aren't grounded in reality.

Just my two cents. ;)

My wife still has it and I urge her to get rid of it. I pay attention to the stuff she has on her feed and the groups she belongs to... It's all, literally just stupid, mind numbing, b.s.

I made a comment to her once as nicely as possible, and I said, "Imagine what you could be doing if you weren't wasting all that time on Facebook focusing on these nonsense Buzzfeed articles and other useless information.".

I'm not saying there couldn't be anything useful on Facebook, but mostly it's just people ranting about politics, sharing status updates no one cares about, complaining about who harassed who, and posting memes we've all seen a thousand times by now.

100% agree. I ask my fiance that every day. I don't think Facebook users really understand how much subliminal/subconscious negativity and depression they actually suffer from due to the platform. I had a Myspace back in the day like every other kid and I made a Facebook the year it was publicly available. Four or five years later (before it even got really bad) I just couldn't manage the weight on my shoulders. I just felt a lump in my mind when it came to those sites and nothing made more sense than to get rid of that lump altogether.

I've never regretted it and I'm never going back.

I'd like to specify that the users I am talking about are the people who spend hours a day on it. Not the average "grandma and grandpa have a Facebook to keep track of the family" user.

Yep, and no one will admit it either. It's like an alcoholic saying, "I'm not addicted, I can stop at anytime.". Can you really? Because that's what any addict would say.

I'm not trying to say I think less of anyone for being on Facebook, I'm simply saying I recognized what was an addiction (and something that was modifying my behavior) and I decided enough was enough. My life is better without Facebook, I'm not missing out on anything, and from the years I spent on there, I am confident I'm also not missing out on any valuable information. Google still exists, and that's all I need to find whatever it is I'm looking for.

I relate to what that former Facebook exec was saying in his interview. That people are getting a dopamine hit to their brain anytime someone "Likes" their post, comments on their post, shares their post, etc. It's modifying people's behavior subconsciously to seek out that sort of gratification.

One of the Mom groups my wife is in is a perfect example of this. Moms occasionally post photos of themselves all dressed up with a caption such as, "Date night! Getting ready to go out with my hubby!".

Explain to me why a group of 100,000 random people on Facebook need to a photo of you all dressed up ready to go out? I'll explain it... Because the more likes that photo gets, the more complimentary comments it gets, and the more reaction it gets, the more that gives that person gratification and satisfaction. Most people don't look at it that way, but it actually makes total sense when you think about it.
