Fender flare width

quick question for you all.
2001 TJ, bought with 35/12.50r15 tires and aftermarket wheels...i live in the mtn's, snow is thawing and there's mud everywhere!!!!!
with the stock fender flares i can not keep the mud off ANY of my windows including the windshield.
i just put a tape measure against the body and the tires stick 9" outside of the body.
do i need 9" flares or with the 7" ones keep mud off my windows???

The more coverage the better, especially over the tread.
However, some of that (on your window) is from when the tires are turned and stick out even further.
9" sounds like a lot for 35s.
What's the backspacing on your wheels?

Ok, look, what you do is your choice. You can get narrower axles, wheels with more backspacing, narrower tires, and/or wider flares. Whatever tickles your fancy. Welcome to the forum!

Plastic lawn edging for the win!

Been thinking about a couple of threaded holes in the lips of my fenders... maybe 1/4-20...and some sacrificial lawn edging.

I'd get narrower tires and different wheels before I'd put those wide "Dumbo" flares on my TJ. You're still going to get mud all over it when you turn the wheels.
p.s. You could always use a kiddie pool and make some pocket flares.
