Fuel smell

The last 2 times or so when I fill the tank I have the extremally strong smell of gas in the cab. It's so strong I have to keep the windows rolled down every time until I get to about half full. I have looked over the entire Jeep with no signs of leaks or anything. No cracks around the evap canister. No CEL and it runs fine. Any ideas where to look next?? Thanks

It's probably time to drop the tank and start replacing anything rubber that looks hardened or cracked.

Everything in and on the tank was replaced about 2 years ago.

7 or 8 years ago now one of the hoses that connect to the rollover valve on my tank had dry rotted. In addition to a fuel leak I had the strong vapor smell in the cab. Replaced the hose and its been trouble free ever since.

Everything in and on the tank was replaced about 2 years ago.

May need to go in and reinspect that work... there are a very limited selection of sources for the smell of gas to come from...

Has your mpg recently dropped? You might just have a bad upstream O2 sensor that has hoodwinked the PCM into setting the air/fuel mixture full rich. That'll cause a strong gasoline aroma.

If you replace the upstream O2 sensor avoid store brands and Bosch, stay strictly with the OEM which is NTK, NGK, or Mopar. No need to also replace the downstream O2 sensor which has nothing to do with this problem, it only monitors the catalytic converter.

It's possible something was pinched on the re-install and has just now started to leak vapors.

Something similar happened on a YJ I bought last year. I met the PO for a test drive and as I let it idle and walked around inspecting it, I noted gas dripping quite profusely from the rear corner.

No. This just started and I did the fuel pump almost 2 years ago .

The PCM isn't usually smart enough to know if an O2 sensor is reporting incorrect data. And when an O2 sensor code is generated that doesn't always mean the O2 sensor is actually at fault. For one example my 04 TJ kept getting CELs with O2 sensor codes and occasional misfires that were ultimately fixed with all new catalytic converters. One of the pre-catalytic converters had gone bad screwing up its upstream O2 sensor output data. That pre-catalytic converter eventually came apart inside and its insides blew out downstream clogging the main catalytic converter. The original O2 sensors were reinstalled into the new cats. 11 years later everything is still perfect.
