Have watched all of @hosejockey61 ‘s gear videos at least twice this week and still don’t think I can read a pattern correctly. :ROFLMAO:

This is in a front JK HP44 with Revolution 5.13’s on the factory electric locker. Backlash is 7 thou. Is this slightly too shallow?

Hard to read because you have way, way, way too much pattern grease on there. There is so much it is running onto the pattern at the root. Wipe all of it off, use very, very little grease to barely paint the teeth, and go again.

Also, make sure you are using a bunch of tension on the carrier as you turn the pinion to get a good pattern.

Much. To me, it looks a bit deep given the hard line at the root on the drive side. Have you bracketed your pattern yet?

But I am not a pattern expert. We will wait for the master.

No, I haven’t. I fought backlash for an hour and a half and couldn’t decide what I thought of the pattern since it seemed to me to wipe away all the grease towards the face on the initial too much grease application. Now I see it isn’t and also see the hard line in the root but there also isn’t much grease left at the face. I definitely do not have an eye for this! lol.

It's definitely an art. Big Mike will get you sorted.

'Course, if we don't hear from Mike soon, we always have AI....

😉

Sorry, at work today and just finished my last meeting (10:00 p.m.)

Jeff was right about too much compound, but you got that cleaned up. Josh, I have to say you are really close for a first time out. I think you are maybe 1-2 deep is all. Shops would run that. But we aren't 100% sure. Take OUT 5 thou and we should see the pattern flip to shallow and then we will know for sure. You are really close!

Thanks Mike. I was mid-next try while you wrote that. I removed 2 thou, backlash is at 8 thou. My untrained eye thinks this looks pretty good if before was acceptable?

Sadly the shim selection on both sides is getting pretty slim picking to move much more in small increments. They only sent 5 pinion shims total of 4 sizes and also only 4 sizes of carrier shims. On this last try I just added more preload on the magnet side to open up backlash to 8 from 4 because I didn’t have the right combo to do it just by moving side to side.

I cannot stand that they don't include 3 thou shims anymore.

We're cutting hairs now. If there is any way you can add 1 thou to the depth, that would make it as best as it can be. With that being said, this pattern or the previous pattern are both acceptable. Some people like it a touch deep when they have a lot of horsepower, but that's entirely up to you.

3 thou! 10 thou was the smallest they sent. 10, 13, 18, 22. 1 of each except 2 10’s. I think this is where we’ll have to stay. I appreciate you sir! I shall buy you a State of Utah issued adult beverage of choice or 5 in a few weeks! I still have the rear to do, so I’ll be bothering you again in a couple days.

Shims used to come in 3, 5, 10, 12, 15, 20, and 30. And you would get a lot of them. You can see how making a 1 thou change was possible.

Wait - no near-beer for me?

Yeah, that would have made it possible. Factory shim was 47 and we ended up at 45. Didn’t see a way to make 46 with the 5 shims I got. If I had a couple 3’s could have made it work. Thanks again!

I love these gear pattern threads!

Mike helped me get my gears dialed in several months ago (they're doing GREAT, by the way), and since then, I study these threads with great fascination.

I try to make my own calls about what I think the pattern says before I read @hosejockey61 or @Blackjack comments. I'm getting much more adept at reading the patterns now. Will be doing the gears in my WJ this summer, hopefully, and doing my TJ's gears combined with Mike's videos and the tons of gear pattern threads has made me much more confident.

Just wanna say I really appreciate this forum. I have gained SO MUCH knowledge here, both on the TJ in particular, and mechanicing in general.

Thanks, TJ forum, and thanks to all the knowledgeable members who share their skills so freely!

(Sorry to derail your thread a bit, @Abendage but im drinking coffee and thinking fondly of working on my project WJ this summer!🤣)

Glad to help out. Lord knows how much help I have received from the forum as well. Great group of people!
