Help me identify these axle differentials

Hey everyone!

The best friend of my uncle had a shop with some parts for old Jeeps, he retired, so I "inherited" a lot of old Jeep stuff (axle differentials, transfer cases, transmissions, doors, hoods, etc).

I am trying to figure out what is what, since there are a lot of stuff, most of them dirty, and not really organised.

Please help me identify some axle differentials first.

So:
Picture #1, I am sure its a Dana 30, right?
Picture #2, is it a Dana 35 ? i am not sure
Picture #3, Is it a Dana 44? I could not take a photo from a different angle. There is a tag with the number 42513, if that means anything.

Anyones input would be highly appreciated! Thanks

I am really excited that I now have a Dana 44 for free.

Can I use any Dana 44 axle (if in good condition) in my TJ? Or is it something else that I have to check before, since I dont know anything about what kind of Jeep they were taken from

As long as the Dana 44 came from another TJ, it will bolt-right in. The only thing that will need to change is the driveshaft. I can't recall for sure, but I believe the driveshaft for the Dana 44 equipped TJs is a bit shorter than your current driveshaft.

Make sure you find out what vehicle that Dana 44 came out of, or at least get more full size photos of it. If it's not from another TJ, it could be more work to put in.

For instance, the Dana 44 from an XJ Cherokee is setup for leaf springs, and while it could be converted to work, this is at least worth knowing.

Pull the 44 and measure the WMS. You want it to match the axle that is currently in it. The 44 looks like it came out of something very old. I could be wrong there, but the 30 looks like it came out of a TJ or XJ.

Will do. Yeah it looks really old. I have 4-5 more axle differentials. I have to organise, measure and identify everyone, so I know what I am working with! (most of his stuff are pre-2000 though)

I just gave them a quick look today and was impressed there was a Dana 44 in there.

I have Dana 30, and Dana 35, since I have a SE model, so I would be very happy if I can find anything superior to upgrade my TJ budget-friendly.

Well one is an IRS setup...which is not useful here.

The other is a Chrysler 8.25” called the CR213R. Some versions had an, “electric locker.”

Neither are candidates for an axle swap.

I’m curious, why post these for identification?

So, because I am still a noob in those topics, do any of you guys have any idea from which Jeep is this taken from?

Is it worth "saving"?

Yes, XJs have rear leaf springs. Clean off the thin metal tag on the left side of the diff cover. Copy the bill of material number (see pic below) and look it up on this website: https://www.expert.dana.com/expertforms/demenu.aspx

Some folks have converted their TJs to rear leaf springs, others have cut brackets from a TJ axle and moved them to the Dana 44. Several companies make bracket adapters for swapping axles on to the TJ.

I will look into to the bracket adapters, to see if it is worth it. I wouldn't really want to convert to rear leaf spring.

I will maybe try to sell some of the axles, in order to save for a used Dana 44 from a TJ.

What?! It is a XJ Dana 44.

You can use it in a TJ. Measure the wheel mounting surface.

To use it in a TJ all you have to do is cut the leaf spring and shock mounts off the axle, grind the axle tubes smooth, and then weld on TJ brackets.

The Dana 30 behind the Dana 44 is a leaf sprung YJ high pinion 30. While it is high pinion, its not desirable for a TJ swap.



The axle behind the YJ Dana 30 looks like a Dodge 44 or 60 balljoint, and center axle disconnect. Not very desirable for a swap either.
