Help! They sent me the wrong transmission fluid!

So I ordered 3 bottles of MTL for my NV3550 last week online for $40. Purchase and everything clearly states MTL. Open the box today and I got sent MT-90. The problem I made was draining the tranny before checking to make sure I was sent the right product. I’ve ready everywhere that MTL is recommended for my tranny, but can I at least use the MT-90 till the right stuff shows up? Or can anyone recommend something I can pick up from Oreileys to get me by? Thx in advance.

Hi There,

I am no expert in the matter by I think MT-90 is just a bit thicker. It might not run as easy or as smoothly as the MTL, but it will not hurt it. If you are not going to return the MT-90, you could use it, otherwise the Royal Purple Synchomax will work as well from O'Reiley.

I just went thru the same thing on my 03 with the 5 speed. I talked to Red line and the main difference is MT90 meets the specs for about 40 wt thickness and MTL oil meets the specs for about 30 wt consistency. The MTL would be a hair better in colder climates but he said either would be fine. I also looked up what he said after we hung up to confirm everything and that is what it says on their web site.

I appreciate the response. I’m going to the store right now (borrowing sister’s car) to see if I can find a 75w-80 gear oil that’s safe for the brass syncros. It’s pretty warm here and only drops to 50 at night so I’m not too worried about cold weather. If not I guess I’ll dump the MT90 in.

Just run the Redline MT-90, you'll be fine. Its viscosity is close enough, there is no other difference between it and MTL
