High travel, high clearance & high octane, a streetable adventure LJ story

tube within a tube. if it would hold on to the base of the cap, it looks tapered to me but could be funky lighting

I know California is like a bad word to some. Our nozzles have a large rubber boot or stopper at that first ridge so they might not fit in as far. I don't know if that's important or not. Plenty of good pictures on the internet if you look for VST nozzles. I only post because you might someday decide to do the Rubicon and it might be useful to consider? There is also a small possibility the new CA style nozzles will appear in your neighborhood at some point.

I can imagine you got some strange looks hopping into the back seat with the filler nozzle.

I remember hating those even on a stock TJ. I do plan on Jeeping in CA so I'd like for that style to work too.

If I remember correctly the vapor collector snout pushes back to expose more nozzle length? Does anyone know how much insertable length is available?

Does the vapor collector need to sense pressure to allow fill up? My fuel cell is basically the same as trying to fill up a wide mouth gas can.

I'm starting to think going with a stock TJ style mounting bowl to angle the filler down is going to be my best bet.

Some of the rubber boots can be pushed back a bit but others are fixed. That VST image search will show you plenty of examples of the fixed type which is most likely to cause issues, it cannot be retracted.

that doesn't look like it has the room to seat the end of a 2nd tube, sorry was 1st thing that came to mind.

you could do the rubber piece then transition to the flexi hose. or the bowl you don't really want.

if it were me i'd mount that sucker permanent to the roll bar with a bracket like that Motobuilt or similar and do a velcro flap for access and never has to move if you pull the top

I like the velcro flap idea but I don't have the equipment or knowledge to sew the top. Anyone have contacts in high places?

you taught yourself to weld, a few stitches should be a cake walk.

got anything small you could offer as trade to someone with a similar material shit top to cut and send you a nice sized piece. so you have a nice overlap.
anybody that does canvas repair or boat covers could do this for ya.

I haven't been participating in this thread so I'm not sure why I'm referenced here. Is it because of a velcro flap for something?

I mentioned you because you have become quite accomplished at sewing up jeep stuff, that's all. I digress.

sorry............ for getting this about as far away from a quick fix as possible. but your not gonna be happy if it's not right.
not that this is the answer but you got a few more ideas to ponder now.

Auto or marine upholstery shops. Lots of boats in Wisconsin, if my memory is correct. :)

b4 this gets to ordering something. be sure the roll bar mount will keep you tight enough to the cover. and might have to fab up the right piece.

you don't wanna have to shove the 1/2 nozzle into the jeep.

Rather than a flap, here's a mod to soft top sides that could solve your problem and add functionality. Soft top side windows are a bit awkward to open and don't roll up nicely, so if you do this mod it would be easy to unzip the side for access to the filler, and as a bonus you'd get roll-up side windows. This video shows the mod on a JKU, but the same mod can be applied to TJ side windows.

It's a pretty simple sewing mod, if you're interested I can provide more detail.

Here's the window in the video rolled up:

Neat ideas! We do have a lot of boats in the area. If it's not something I can do myself I might be able to see if one of the shops can.

Rolling up the entire panel is a cool idea, but isn't feasible in the winter when the fabric shrinks (the rear window can be nearly impossible at times). Okay for storage, but not okay if I need to fill up with gas. Also my armor on the outside makes it more difficult to unhook the bottom than I'd want to every 3 hours.

I took a closer look at where the flap would have to be positioned and it's going to have to be over a window to get enough angle on the filler tube.

Any ideas how to position a flap there?
