Homemade ski rack?

Whenever I think of complicated ski racks, I then think about the racks on the sides of shuttle buses in ski areas...it's a box with a rectangle hole cut in the top for each set of skis. This would be very easy to duplicate out of some good plywood, then figure out a way to mount it to something on the back of the jeep.
Adding an upper locking piece that locks would be nice. I think I would rather weld it out of aluminum though.

If you're able to find an original MOPAR Jeep spare wheel mounted ski rack they're actually not bad. I picked up a couple for $20 ea. My plan was to turn one into a fishing rod rack … when I finally have the time to do it. I also got a bike rack for the same price. They ARE bad.

Hi everyone,

I'm reviving this thread to show you the solution I came up with, since I couldn't find a Mopar ski rack here in Chile, and none of the ones I found on Facebook Marketplace in the U.S. were willing to ship — they were all pickup only.

What I did was use the HighRock tray and some Thule ski holders I already had.
I cut one bar in half, drilled some holes and secured it to the tray using 1/4 x 1.5 bolts in the threaded holes meant for tie-downs.
It worked perfectly to carry up to 4 pairs of skis horizontally. It’s not ideal, but I only had to buy the bolts, so I spent less than one dollar.

Regards,

Mariano

What did you figure out? I would like to figure out something for the OR-Fab tire carrier below and hope your end result would give me an idea.

I have this oR Fab tire carrier and have been planning to build a vertical ski holder box for it out of sheet metal using the studs for the highlift on top to secure it and some hooks on the bottom bar. Plan to setup the box the way a gondola holds skis, making sure to leave them fat for my powder ski tails.

Despite thinking this for years, the TJ is my last choice of our 3 cars for ski trips and I haven't made it a priority in the last 21 years I've owned it. I prefer our sweedewagon or my C4S on it's winter tires. Both are easier to drive on icy roads.

If you're interested, having 2 cut would probably not be too much more and I have some time in Sept to work it out.

This is a good design solution. How long are the white/gray skis?
