How does this gear pattern look?

Did you try to tighten up BL and see where that puts your pattern? I'd do that first before I'd drop the pinion closer.

i can try that. but i only have a .002 to play with there. i'll see if i can tweek it that way b4 i try the pinion.
i did this rather unconventionally. i got to a .011 backlash and instead of swapping shims from side to side, i re- stuffed the non RGS to add pre load to push me into that .008 ............and it's so nice and tight.
 
that sucker was tight i had to pry it out with an aluminum bar, while cranking the pinion around.

ok, i got the backlash down to .0063-.0064 ish.
not much improvement, almost identical really. it's centered toe to heel, but still not top to root.

the pinion teeth deepen along their length, bringing it up should cause it to touch deeper, i gotta try it.
should have some results tomrw.

alright people ..................plz excuse my stubbornness. if i had not tried this and something was to happen, i'd always feel like i fell like i cheated and didn't make sure.
as it ends up i think the last set (^ last post) was it.
i did bring the pinion up the least available amount. backlash at .008 and i'm getting flat bottom 1/2 moons.

so i'm going back to this, unless you all see something i don't. with the thinnest increase available it's pushing the pinion to far, and the backlash on this set (^) was the low end.....i don't see how i can get any better than this.

alright, i wiped all that thick grease away. mixed a batch with a few drops of gear oil and jammed a couple wooden handles into the casing to force some load, this time i needed a ratchet to turn the pinion.

almost the same result.
i tried to get a side view, it's really hard to determine depth from pics.
in the last pic you can see how deep into the tooth i am. it's really only about 1/2 way to the root, and this leaves just a very narrow edge at the top. it's operating on the top 50% of the tooth, i think i'd want to be deeper, no?

if this was my sedan i'd be fine with it. but this is a rig i intend to push up against stuff and force it over.
thinking i want to be hitting a little closer to root and have it push off b4 coming close to having pressure on the tooth top

Sometimes the hardest part is knowing when good is good enough. If it were mine I would clean it up, put the diff. cover back on, fill with fluid and proceed to break in. Looks good enough right there.
