How much rust is too much rust?

Finally bought my first Jeep. And she's rust free.

Smart. Man, you're in SoCal, I wouldn't even glance at a vehicle that came from Michigan if I lived out there. Rust sucks. Working on our vehicles is and can be fun, but if every bolt you turn requires pulling out the blue wrench (torch) or the bastard just breaks, its really no fun. Just look at some of the threads on this website about removing the rear upper shock bolts.

....and laying under it as it falls in your eyes. It is murder. It really is. Elongated holes, nasty, everything is hard and you are disgusted.

Where are you in MA?
I'm in Fairhaven and you aint kidding about rust leaving the dealer maybe not brand new but I have seen 2010 up to 2017's jeep JKs completely rusted out frame still asking 10-12K with high mileage.

2010-2017 a lot of those jeeps people riding the shit out of them everywhere daily driving in the salt and mud and never washing them. On time there was this 2015 rubicon parked at the trade in lot it looked clean. I already knew I wanted nothing to do with it when I pull up to the lot but still I put my hand in the frame and pull out huge chucks of mud. There are posts that can be dug up online from 2007 or 2009 saying help me please my 97 wrangler has a shot frame

Normally I would but it's an LJ with only 100K on the odo and he's only asking $16K

Got my LJ mint with 100k for $11,750. I'd keep looking.

What a lot of people ignore and is a very important question… what is your goal? And is your goal realistic with the vehicle you’re looking at. Is your goal to buy a 20 year old vehicle for cheap money that will be your daily driver and last the next 10 years? That’s simply not going to happen. When it comes to rust, you’re simply looking at time. Is $16k worth 4-5 years? That’s about what that Jeep will have left if you do nothing.

I purchased mine for $3k absolutely rusted to piss. Got 3 years out of it and she’s done. That’s about what I expected.

Rust on under carriage looks like surface rust. Rockers are rust magnets on all cars can be repaired at auto body shop @ $400-$600

Another thing that becomes evident is you’ll see the people from Northern and Northeastern areas are much less afraid of it.
