Hunting for a Dana 44

It esploaded 😫

Killed my evidently not Tom Woods shaft shortly after getting my TT installed. Autopsy pointed to mechanical bind which broke the centering pin killing it from just short street driving while trying to dial in the pinion angle.

I had a local shop make me a new shaft which they clearanced. Very minor to no vibes now, but the double carden gets too hot to touch for more than a second or two even from a 4-5 mile drive. Also, looking at it up close, I can see where a little more clearancing needs done as there are some slight marks where it's tickled itself inside the carden joint again (probably from one small off-road "excursion" in my front yard just enough to flex it a little). I have about 4" of lift in the back. I'm planning to lower it to 3" (and remove the rake), get a little more mml, and do the SS SYE and maybe this Dana 44, but now you have me questioning it.
What is your operating angle on the double cardan joint?

Haven't measure. I will when I get home tonight. Both vertical and horizontal offset.
Start with just the vertical operating angle. If it's any less than what mine is I don't think the angle should be causing your binding

Figure out why your driveshaft exploded first, I'm very skeptical that a Dana 44 is going to fix your problem

The set from CL is still available and only about 4 hrs away. He said they are still under the Jeep. Hoping I can snag them as they are perfect if in good shape. Anybody got any tips on stuff to check for?

You very well may be right. I'm still going to try and grab those axles though. But yeah, need to consider all potential angles (no pun intended). I will measure my DS angles tonight.

Thanks! I'm actually looking in to those brackets somebody on this board was producing to help not lift the front end on launch, so these would be ideal. Not too far off a drive either.
Good deal! I messaged him last week for a friend and he still had the pumps too. My friend ended up backing out so I saw this thread and figured I would pass it along.

This thread makes me wonder how much my Dana 44 will be worth when I sell it. Its not even in my jeep yet hahaha

Give me a call. I have some concerns with this one, so let's go over it on the phone.

Looks like my vertical angle is about 19*? I'm using the flat face of the AA SYE to determine the motor/tranny/x-fer case angle.

And where is that shaft from? 19* should be no problem, a 1310 double cardan should max around 30* and still spin at slow speeds smoothly, so there's something fucky going on with your shaft. The castings look a lot more bulky than mine, a 1310 from Tom woods

Yeah, they look different for sure. A smart guy I know suggested a SS SYE and a new TW driveshaft is what I need.

On those CL axles, here are the pics he sent. Kinda crusty. No locker pumps included:

Those are pretty crusty. I didn't get any detailed pics. He told me he had the pumps though bummer. I know a thread on here mentioned there are a few other pump options from other vehicles that work.

Those would probably need new brackets at least of it's really bad. Also who knows if the lockers still work or what the condition of the internals look like.

That cv driveshaft you have looks weird though. Hardly any room for any movement. Looks to be less angle avaliable than a non cv shaft.

Hopefully you can get it all fixed up soon! Also we need a VA tj meet or something!

I don't know if the SS SYE would be necessary, but it certainly wouldn't hurt if you think you may need it for future mods. I run mine at an operating angle of 21*-22* and it's vibe free, though the centering ball only lasts a year or so. If you're truly at 19* I would expect quote a bit more life than mine, probably 150% increase or more

To be completely sure I would measure the angle of the shaft then pulled the double cardan off and measure the angle of the face of the yoke

I forgot to mention the shaft was made by a local place just because Tom Woods was out of stock on the parts needed to make it at the time. Ironically the local shop costed more and it took several trips to get it "right."

Got some stuff to think about tonight, thanks guys.
