Is this too much rust?

What did you do to the frame? Did you take the tub off?

We do the frame this coming summer. We will beat out the inside with a drill and attachment my son built. Then we will blow it out and clean it in prep for painting. Then we will Eastwoods internal frame coat. Then we'll do the outside of the frame. Here's some pics of the rig. How it started and what it is now.

No, I'm legitimately looking for advice, not trying to argue anyone. In my mind, this example is priced 5-6k under what a rust-free one would be. I'm not an expert, which is I'm here trying to decide if it is dealing with this level of rust for 5-6k.

You're looking at this wrong. $16,500 isn't a bargain for what can be seen. The bubbling on the right rear corner is a indication that more rust is waiting for you. If I were a betting person, I'd bet at least one rocker, likely passenger side, is rusted underneath the rocker guards. You'd be much better finding a rust free one at $20K plus, than buying this one.

it's just that a similar PNW rig would cost over 20k easily.

IMO, it's better to spend more for a solid rig than try to save a few thousand and deal with the time, expense and headache of fixing a rust bucket.

Not an LJR, but an LJ with some good mods. Incomplete build. East side of WA. $14k. I’m very tempted to go get it.

Take a look at the pics I posted above that show the rust progress we made on a Patriot Blue TJR since last May. This is the 5th TJ suspension I've built. This last one is the only one that had rust. It took me and my son 70 hours just to build the suspension. We did it in 8 days. I have no idea how much time we have in the tub doing paint and rust correction. It's pretty nice in those two departments, but we still have to do the frame and we're still going to have to stay after rust in the future. Do you want to do that? We did it because it's a father-son thing and it's about more than building a rig. It's about building a relationship, solving problems, learning, and growing.

Thanks for posting pics, really helps to put the work in perspective! Any LJ will probably also be a project with my dad. But I think I’d rather spend our time on lifting, regearing it and doing engine work than body/frame work.

Buy one of the many non Rubi LJ’s around Washington/Oregon for $14-18k and spend the time and money you were gonna spend on this rust bucket, doing the lift, regear, and lockers. Rubicons are nice, but you can make something more capable for way less money and stress then you’d get with that rusted POS.

Thank you all for the advice! I’ve decided to pass on this example. The rig I end up getting will be long term, and built right for 35s, and I don’t want to invest that much money into something rusted. Thanks again yall.
