Hi Guys (experts),

Noob here. I have been a reader only to this site for a little over a year but just signed up because I needed some insight on where to start with a problem I have with the ignition. My 2001 Sahara has been running great ever since we bought it 1.5 years ago but last night at the store I couldn't shut the Jeep off. The key spins in the ignition with a little bit of resistance but it won't shut off the engine. I had to kill the motor by popping the clutch. The dash lights stay on, the battery is active as if the key is still in the ACC location, it won't turn over now either, so I disconnected the battery so it wouldn't drain. I did notice that the key symbol on the dash is now illuminated so don't know where to start on this. I tried to get the ignition cylinder out by pressing the release under the steering column but I need a special tool to pry it out. Does anyone know what to do or have this problem in the past? I appreciate any responses and fire away with any questions. Thanks.

It sounds to me like your ignition switch may be the culprit here. I'm curious to hear what everyone else thinks, but this is what I'm thinking.

Sounds like the ignition switch. It is an easy fix (took a few minutes on my son's '97). There are many videos on Utube. Make sure you have the correct size security torx tools or you wont be able to do the job. The parts are available at NAPA and usually in stock.

FOLLOW-UP: You guys were correct. I took apart the steering column and noticed the ignition switch actuator pin was busted inside the ignition switch and it was in the "on" position which explains why the battery was always live. I order the 2 parts that were available and in stock from Amazon Prime for 2-day shipping (Dorman 924-704 and Standard Motor Products US447). Installed these 2 part and it works like a charm.

Problems I encountered: Lining up the key cylinder to the actuator pin assembly was the most difficult. I had to kind of wiggle and push the key in the cylinder to get them lined up properly. It took me longer than it did fljeeper but overall a fairly easy fix. The videos that are available explain it step by step.

I want to thank you guys, for your suggestions...it saved me a bunch, about $50 for parts was all.
