Mid-arm LJ Rubicon

Ol Sunny Side Up is back in action! After getting the alignment dialed in, I planned a quick trip to 5 mile pass in Utah. A close to home wheeling spot that offer some challenging trails/lines. A few friends joined. We had 3 LJ’s and @TJustin TJ with us. Great group!! I’m pumped with the new steering and track bar set up. I was able to climb up the obstacle that had bent my previous steering on a past trip. I’ll call it a win. I still need to tie up some loose ends, but I’m getting close to having it 100% back together.

How'd the Baja bosses do compared to the MTRs?

Much better! Not a fair comparison tho. The last time I ran this trail it was very muddy. These rocks are granite and slick enough dry. Adding water and mud makes some obstacles near impossible. But nonetheless I am impressed and happy with the tires!

Great seeing the yellow beast in action. Is your antirock disconnected?
Good eye...Yes it is disconnected. The new steering will not work with the factory mounts I had to cut them off. Plan A didn't work. Plan B is Clayton offroad high steer sway bar mount, But of course they are about a month out. So I just tied it up under the fender. If the Clayton mounts don't work, I'll move onto making some custom ones.

CAUTION: This next post required the removal of the driver airbag. We die like men.

All jokes aside. I know some people think I’m crazy for removing a factory piece of safety equipment. But for me, the trade off is worth the risk. (I don’t do much road driving anyways)

I’ve debated the Genright quick disconnect steering wheel kit for some time now. The concept is cool, but the loss of the clock spring was a deal breaker for me.

After some research I found a hub adapter that would work while keeping the factory clock spring! This means the auto canceling turn signals, and horn button work as they should! For the airbag light, I wired in a resistor so there is no warning light on the dash. For kicks and giggles I added a quick disconnect hub. Pairing this with a flat steering wheel, the offset is very close to factory. Had the graphic department at work make me a custom horn button for a finishing touch. If anyone wants more details reach out, I’m happy to share.

I had this exact same hub/QD setup in my old first gen Miata for years and loved it. NRG makes some of the best quality hubs I’ve used. Looks great and unlike the cheap eBay ones, the ball bearings wont get loose and develop play in the wheel over time.

That’s good to hear! I was worried about long term wear. They seem like quality parts

Figured it was time to get the antirock hooked back up. With the WJ knuckle swap, my factory sway bar mounts were not going to work. They got chopped off. I needed some that were much higher. I decided to give the Clayton high steer sway bar mounts a try. Unfortunately they weren’t quite high enough! So a little bit of cutting, welding and grinding, I got them where they needed to be. Everything now clears at full stuff and full lock both ways. I’m happy to have the antirock back connected!

Half door time!!! I’ve been on the hunt ever since I purchased the LJ. Finally saw a set come up on the local classifieds, $150 with the soft uppers about an hour away from home. The wife and I quickly jumped in the car and we were off to pick them up!!

Im not joining the mismatched half door club…my OCD wouldn’t allow for it. A few little dings to fix and some interior panels to dye and I’m well on my way to a matching set. The plan is to have them done in time for Trail Hero in Sand Hollow UT, in Oct.
