Mounting a sub in a non-sub console (What can I expect?)

I have a TJ-Rubi that came without a sub. I have the standard, all-the-way-to-the-center-of-the-earth depth console.

I also have the Kicker Hideaway powered sub.

Tonight I pulled the console to see if I could hide the sub in the console. It seems this one is a touch too big... So I started thinking crazy.

What happens to my bass performance if I pull the speaker and electronics from the Kicker enclosure and custom mount it in the TJ console? I'd line it with some type of dynamat, but I wouldn't be able to seal the opening for the park-brake lever, so it's not a closed box...

I'm asking because I might have already de-cased the speaker and electronics in a fit of "let's see if I can make this work".

It can be done if you have the white plastic enclosure that is riveted to the console, with a bit of fab work. Do a search. There are a few ideas out there. I mounted an 8" slimline sub in mine with a small amp under steering column.

I have the white plastic enclosure, but it's NOT the speaker enclosure.



So I'm wondering, even if I did use that somehow... How will the speaker act/sound in an UNSEALED space?

These are the guts I'm working with. They don't take up much room at all.



Maybe I'll talk to a cabinetmaker friend and see if he could make up something based on the shape of the white plastic part.

Seal the top of the white plastic part with some plywood and epoxy it to seal off the top opening. Cut out the side for the speaker. Line the outside of the white plastic part with sound deadening like Dynamat or similar sound deadener. Add some polyfill (pillow stuffing) inside the enclosure, and drill a small hole in the bottom for the speaker wires. I have pics posted somewhere of how I did mine.

Oh! I thought you started with a sub enclosure and altered it! I guess I do need to go look at that thread again.
