neutral ??

Im trying to figure where my problem is with my drive line. But I have a simple question.
when I put my 97 jeep tj in neutral (5 speed), both gear shift and transfer case, and I have my rear tires off the ground, should my front and rear (drive shafts) spin freely without engaging the transfer case or rear axles.??
Im wondering if my transfer case shifter is set right.

If your driveshafts are spinning, the tires have to be spinning. If your transfer case is in neutral, you should be able to spin the driveshafts as long as you are able to spin the tires.

If you only have the rear jacked up, you should be able to spin the rear driveshaft (the rear tires will spin). But you shouldn't be able to spin the front driveshaft, because then the front tires would move and pull the Jeep off the jacks.

With the trans/tcase both in neutral, your drive shafts are still connected to the front and rear differentials. Spin the tires and it's driveshaft will turn, and vice versa.

X2 and more to the point, those differentials are locked to the tires on the ground which will prevent the driveshafts from turning unless the Jeep is in the air and the tires are free to spin.
