Finished the installation of the tranny cooler today. Yesterday I did some baseline highway tests to see what my trans temp was. I started by doing a 70mph test. My jeep runs about 3200 rpms at that speed. 35s, 4.56 gears with the 32rh. 15 miles into the test I used a flir camera to measure temperature of the trans pan. I know it's not fluid measurement, but best I could do right now. The temp was 200 degrees. It was in the low 90s outside for reference. Another 15 miles in and the temperature was 215. I decided then to slow down to 60, and another two 15 mile tests dropped the temperature to 195 each time. It seems much happier cruising at the slower speeds. Rpms were 2750 ish.
With the cooler plumbed in today, roughly the same conditions outside, the exact same route and speeds resulted in temperatures at 70mph being 155 degrees. So 45-60 degrees cooler. It stayed at 155 during the 70mph test. The 60mph test dropped even further to 147 ish and stayed there.
Definitely happy with the results. Again, I know I'm not measuring actual fluid temperature, but the tests and procedures were as repeatable as I could make them. I definately know that the cooler is working. It's a hayden 679 cooler. Pictures are dark, but its mounted in front of "v" support behind the grill. I still need to do some slower offroad tests, but I'm happy so far.
