How to install a Derale 20561 transmission cooler on your Wrangler TJ

The American Volt sensor off of Ebay did not fit.
The small threaded tip is not the same threads as the Derale.
You would have to get one that comes with its own adapter fittings.
Mine did not.
I do have a temp sensor in the pan. Installed a pan with drain plug and replaced it with.

If the current port is too big, what about plugging the current port and then drilling and tapping a second port for the American Volt sensor?

Found this…may purchase a 175* and 150* since there’s no option from them in between. It’s a 6-32 stud like the Derale.
Gonna look for more options.
Last time my pan gauge was reading 180°, I checked the fan fitting and it was reading in the 130s with an infrared thermometer.
Same, I ordered the 150* a little bit ago.
Derale never responded to my voicemail or email, so I didn’t get a chance to ask them about the duty cycle. (Fuck em)
I’ll get the next size up (175*) later if ever makes sense to do so.

I called Senasys and asked Ryan if they offer temp switches between 150* and 175*.
He said they can do a custom temp (at let’s say 160*) and the set up cost is an additional $35 (when purchasing between 1-19 units). That’s very reasonable imo. Just mentioning this in case the 150* switch is too low.
They also said the switch will be fine with water crossings and there is no duty-cycle limitation.

I definitely do. I did the whole BigBend including black gap on 31s with maybe 1 inch lift, and not a scratch on the cooler. It keeps the transmission cool, never seen it going beyond 195F even for a moment. On normal driving, if you don’t do anything crazy it keeps at 180F, no issues
Do you have a gauge installed to measure it while you ride? If so, please recommend me one, I have only measured mine while parked with my digital thermometer and these extremely hot days in South FL have marked me up to 160f, I have the Hayden on the front of the radiator. But I don't know what temperature I reach when I move.

I used GlowShift sensor kit for transmission temperature. I had to install a new oil pan with drain plug and screw the sensor into drain plug hole.
Transmission temperature sensor is a must for 42RLE.
BTW, for TJ 2005-2006, you can read the temperature from OBD. You need to go through drain plug and special temperature kit only for 2003-2004.

I just installed one of these on my 2004 LJ. It was a bit of a PITA.
1) the bolts for the brackets are really difficult to get wrenches on. Some more thought could’ve gone into that design.
2) the body mounts on the LJ must be in a different location than the TJ because if it goes behind, the hydraulic hoses are too short. If it goes in front, the hoses just reach but the cooler is half way under the skid plate, making access to the mounting brackets even more difficult. I found this out after running my hoses and doing a nice job mounting them. Well, had to do it twice, not happy with the amount of time I spent on that…
3) there is a custom bent hard line in one of the hydraulic hoses that’s purpose is to reverse direction. Once installed and started up, one of the welds on the hard line began profusely leaking. Thats pretty piss poor QC. Being a custom welded line, it would take them 5 seconds to cap the ends off and see if it holds air pressure. They clearly don’t do this. I’m hoping they cooperate with a replacement piece but this is a second rework I’ll have to perform on their kit.
So while it seems like a very nice kit, my experience leaves much to be desired. Fortunately my jeep is not a daily driver or I’d be in a bad way. My guess is I’ll be out of commission for a while waiting for parts and I have a commitment to participate in a parade coming up in 2 weeks. I have doubts they’ll get the parts to me in time. I will follow up after speaking with them.
