Man who shoveled new channel into Lake Michigan convicted

A man accused of diverting a national park river to ease boat access to Lake Michigan has been convicted of two misdemeanors.
Andrew Howard of Frankfort, Michigan, was found guilty of tampering and vandalism Wednesday during a brief trial in front of U.S. Magistrate Judge Ray Kent.
In August 2022, a National Park Service ranger witnessed Howard digging with a shovel so the Platte River in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore would be diverted into one of the Great Lakes, prosecutors said in a court filing.

"Within days, the natural power of the water and the constructed dam caused the river to divert and created a new channel to Lake Michigan that grew to approximately 200 feet wide," Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren Biksacky said.

"It stayed approximately that wide for the summer and fall season," she added. "There was then an influx in the number of fishermen that came to Platte River boat launch to take advantage of the favorable conditions of access created by the new channel."

The Associated Press left a voicemail and email seeking comment from Howard's attorney Thursday.

U.S. Attorney Mark Totten said Howard had a policy dispute with the National Park Service and "took matters into his own hands."

The Park Service no longer dredges the Platte River. As a result, sediment and sand build up, reducing the ability to get boats to Lake Michigan.

When the diversion first occurred, some state and local officials, businesses owners and angler groups expressed support for the increased boat access and argued that it actually benefitted the river, local news site Mlive.com reported. Township officials have called for the river mouth dredged, arguing that its shallowness is a safety hazard that impedes access to Platte Bay for rescue boats.

According to Mlive.com, since dredging stopped in 2016, two people have died in the bay —a teenager from Holt drowned swimming and a 21-year-old died when his kayak capsized.

"it would be nice for a rescue boat to be able to get out there in a timely fashion," Kyle Orr, owner of Riverside Canoe Trips, told Mlive.com.

The 'Steroid Games' Might Be Gaining Some Steam

Aron D'Souza's Enhanced Games to allow athletes to compete without drug tests

A former Australian Olympian is coming out of retirement in an attempt to swim faster than he ever has—while openly on drugs. James Magnussen, 32, aims to beat the world record in the men's 50-meter freestyle, though his time won't be logged in any record book due to his use of performance-enhancing drugs. Magnussen reportedly plans to compete in the inaugural Enhanced Games, an international sports competition dubbed by News.com.auas the "steroid games," where athletes will not be subject to drug testing. For $1 million, "I'll juice to the gills and I'll break [the record] in six months," Magnussen told Sydney's SEN radio on Friday, per the Australian Associated Press.

Australia's most sexually-active woman Annie Knight reveals she's set herself a goal of 365 encounters in 2024 after losing her corporate job because of her secret OnlyFans gig
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-13083527/Annie-Knight-aims-sleep-men-exceed-target.html

An OnlyFans model dubbed 'Australia's most sexually active woman' who slept with 300 men in one year is upping the ante in 2024.
Annie Knight, 26, based in the Gold Coast, sent the internet into meltdown last year after sharing details of her active sex life, and has revealed her new goal: raising the bar to sleeping with 365 men in 2024.
But it turns out the 26-year-old, who boasts being part of the 'top 0.02% on OnlyFans' may well exceed her goal because she's already slept with around 70 men.

Annie, who was sacked from her job in marketing when her OnlyFans side hustle was revealed, claims she never had 'much of a dating life' in the past.
She said: 'I used to go on about three dates a year, so that's why I want to do this.

'I've never been much of a dater, so I wanted to give myself an incentive and am holding myself accountable by posting the reviews of the dates online.
'I'm aiming for 365 [men] in 365 days, and so far, I am well ahead of schedule. I think I will achieve 365 by the middle of the year at this rate'.

Annie took to Instagram Stories last October to confirm that she has her dad's full support despite his initial confusion, telling her followers: 'He's so supportive and just wants me to be happy'.
She wrote: 'She sees how happy I am and is watching all my dreams come true and that's all a mother should want for their daughter - for them to be happy'.

Rochester middle school must change mascots after failed appeal to tribes

Dakota Middle School chose the bison as its mascot after consulting with a Native American advisory group within the district and a Native artist.

ROCHESTER - A middle school here must drop its bison mascot, due to a state law banning public schools from using nicknames, logos or mascots that are tied to Native Americans.

Dakota Middle School, which opened in 2022, chose the bison as its mascot that year after consulting with a Native American advisory group within the Rochester Public Schools and a Native artist. When the Legislature enacted the ban last year, Rochester school officials sought an exemption from one of Minnesota's 11 federally recognized tribes and the Tribal Nations Education Committee.

But none of the tribes granted that appeal, school officials told parents in an email Tuesday.

Though it may be disappointing to change the mascot, the district's "desire is to continue to honor the sacred land and traditions of the Dakota people and all indigenous people," Dakota Middle School Principal Levi Lundak wrote in the email. "We look forward to doing so with our new mascot."

Lundak added that the school will work with the advisory committee and another Native artist to create a new mascot by the next school year.

District officials on Wednesday declined to comment on the issue. A spokesperson said the Rochester school board will discuss the mascot change at a meeting next week.

About a dozen districts across Minnesota face similar mascot issues, from the Pipestone Arrows to the Warroad Warriors. Minnesota's ban on Native American mascots came about as the nation reckons with stereotypes depicting Native Americans in a negative light.

Schools and districts can file for an exemption like Rochester school officials did, but all 11 tribes and the national tribal nations committee must unanimously agree to it.

Residents had mixed reactions over the issue on social media. Some said they understood why the middle school had to change its mascot, while others decried the effort as politically motivated.

Several parents picking up students at the school Wednesday said they either didn't know about the mascot change or supported having Native Americans choose how their culture is portrayed.

"It's important to respect their culture," said Randi Hall while picking up her eighth-grade child.

Michigan waitress is FIRED after receiving astonishing $10,000 tip on $32.43 bill and splitting it with her co-workers - as restaurant claims dismissal was a 'business decision'

Linsey Boyd, a Michigan mother who received the astonishing tip, was let go from the Mason Jar Cafe in Benton Harbor despite generously sharing the money with other eight coworkers.

Boyd said in a now-deleted Facebook post that drama ensued after an anonymous customer left behind the $10,000 tip to honor a recently departed friend.

The middle-aged man in a dark suit wished not to be identified, but said he was in town for the funeral and intended to spread some cheer through the generous gratuity, according to Detroit Free Press.

'I just gave him a hug. I didn't even know his name at that point, but I gave him a hug. He then told me he left her a memorial of someone very dear to him and he wanted to do something kind and generous in her name,' Boyd told WSBT.

The restaurant owners Able Martinez and Jayme Cousins (pictured) said 'labor laws' limited what they could share about the termination of Boyd

What was supposed to be an upbeat story has taken a negative turn, as Boyd revealed in her viral post that she lost her job because of 'all of the drama, animosity and hurt' that ensured from the massive tip.

The restaurant owners Able Martinez and Jayme Cousins said 'labor laws' limited what they could share but claimed that the termination of Boyd had nothing to do with the $10,000 tip.

'We cannot comment on the nature of her losing her job due to labor laws and to protect the staff involved,' the couple wrote in a Facebook post.

'However, I will say it had nothing to do with the tip. She did receive the entire tip, she did not pay taxes on it (the business did). Yes, she shared the tip at the request of the man that left it,' they continued.

But Boyd offered her side of the story, saying she was asked to take mental health day as 'drama' unfolded inside the restaurant because of the tip.

'Drama ensued, and in an attempt to diffuse the situation and resolve any rumors, things became even worse,' she wrote.

She did not specify what happened and has since deleted the post and taken her entire Facebook page down. But rumors have circulated, suggesting the staff who was not working that day may have expected to share the tip.

'The staff that was not working the day of the $10,000 tip expected to be cut it and created an extremely dramatic work environment,' a post reads.

According to Boyd, the management asked her to take another day off 'for things to settle down,' and did not respond to her text asking if she was told 'in a professional way to not come back.'

Boyd was fired through a phone call on Tuesday, marking the first time since the age of 15 that she finds herself without a job.

As the desperate waitress shared her experience, social media users have become infuriated, leaving negative reviews on the restaurant's page and Google Maps.

An angry user shared screenshots of Boyd's post and wrote: 'This is NOT what our community is about. Linsey honored the tippers wishes & shared this act of kindness when many would've kept it to themselves.

'I have personally worked with her & she is one of the most kind & generous humans I have ever met,' they continued.

'SHAME ON YOU & SHAME ON ALL OF THE EMPLOYEES who complained that they didn't get a cut when they were NOT working. How selfish can you be?! I hope this is made right!'

The restaurant owners have since refuted Boyd's claims but refused to go into details about why she was terminated.

'I know there is a lot going around that we let her go because of the tip and that's just not logical,' Cousins told WOOD-TV.

'We have a staff that has continued to work for us for years and college kids that come back every summer and we give chances after chances to our staff, so we clearly would not let someone go for no reason at all.'

The owners wrote on social media that it was a purely business decision, emphasizing that such decisions are not 'made lightly or hastily'.

'We give donations for college funds for them, we kept them employed through Covid, we do everything in our power not to lose staff,' the owners wrote.

Climbing isn't appealing to me, so I have to ask, why?

I’m a climber. Doing scary stuff where you’re not secured like honnold isn’t, freaks me out. I’d never want to do that, but I can understand why somone might. It’s just more of a risk and a challenge added on to a super fun sport.

For me, climbing is a great way to exercise, have fun, etc. I’ve never been to a conventional gym to lift weights. Not my thing. It seems so repetitive and I know I’d get insanely bored. I go to the local climbing gym 5 times a week. I am stronger than a majority of my friends that lift weights regularly and far beyond them when it comes to strength to bodyweight ratio.

It’s also super social and has a great community. I’m not on any teams, but youth teams have become a huge thing in the past couple years as well as competitions where where people will go and compete just like any other competition. Thats all done indoors on fake holds.

Climbing outside is where the real fun is, at least for me. Just being outside in the woods is a huge part of that. But there’s something oddly addictive about climbing rocks outside and always wanting to find and climb harder and harder stuff.

Think about your TJ. You like to off-road, likely because it gets you outside, a break from other stuff, it’s fun, you meet other people with similar interests to you, and it’s a challenge. When you’re not wheeling, you think about it. You think about your tj, you dream of upgrades to make to it so that it can go on harder trails. Why? Because you enjoy it and it’s a good challenge. You feel a sense of accomplishment when you complete an hard trail or obstacle. Extremely similar to climbing.

A woman lost her $823,000 injury claim after lawyers found a photo of her winning a Christmas-tree-throwing competition

A woman in Ireland who sued an insurance company for $823,000 had her injury claim tossed out after the court saw a photo of her taking part in a Christmas-tree-throwing competition.

Kamila Grabska, 36, sued RSA Insurance over what she said were back and neck pains from a car crash in 2017, the Irish Independent reported.

The accident rendered her unable to work for more than five years, she said.

Grabska also said she could not carry her children, finish basic chores, or lift a heavy bag and that, at times, she needed her medication to be brought to her in bed due to the pain, the outlet reported.

But a photo shown to the Irish High Court in Limerick featured Grabska chucking a Christmas tree in January 2018, the report said.

Grabska, a resident of the town of Ennis, was one of the people photographed tossing 5-foot spruce trees at the local tree-throwing competition, as seen in this BBC article. Contestants compete to see who can hurl a tree the farthest.

The Irish Independent reported that Grabska admitted to Judge Carmel Stewart that she won the competition.

A 2018 article from the outlet named her as the victor in the ladies' event. Grabska is featured in the article's lead image in a yellow jacket and work gloves and appears to be flinging a tree.
