No Crank No Start

Got a bit of an odd one … 99 TJ

I havnt driven the jeep since last sunday. Today went to run out for a haircut and wont crank. Got back and tapped with hammer while the wife turned the key and it cranked, but wont fire.

Does anyone find this odd? Or should i just replace and see what happens?

You hit it with a hammer and it cranked. So where did you hit it with a hammer? The starter? You should be doing some basic diagnostics first to help us help you, and before heading to "replace" so you know what may or may not require replacing.
Spark, fuel and air is what you are checking. Start with the battery. What are the volts as it sits? Have it load tested. Check and thoroughly clean, then tighten all battery connections. Inspect the condition of all battery wires for corrosion, same with wires going to the starter. Don't forget the grounds. Are you getting spark at the plugs? What is your fuel pressure while cranking? And what is it after cranking and letting it sit for a few minutes? Not to be a smart ass but you do have fuel right? Get back to us on the forum on all this and we'll help further from there.

I have 12+ volts on the gage

Yes, I had tapped the starter with a hammer and she started cranking. This tells me I have a bad starter so i am going to swap it out today.

What i am finding odd is that she wont fire up once the starter is unfrozen from tapping it. It just sits there cranking, but crank sounds good and hard. Just seems strange to suddenly have more than one issue. Maybe the bendix isnt making it all the way out to the flywheel. I will update after i get the new one in there.

You probably do not have a bad starter; just dirty....
The solenoid may be sticking, the brushes may be handing up or the slip rings may be oxidized....
You could use pressurized air and contact cleaner to fix the problem.

Replace the starter, then I would check the fuses under the hood. If those are good you may have to go down the road of checking for spark and fuel pressure etc..

My next question, i am surprised ive never noticed this, looks like PO was fiddling around down here. Where is the starter ground wire supposed to go to?

I saw some electrical tape on the ground wire and uncovered two wires just twisted together going to this block on the back of the ac canister

That looks like a relay hidden up there connected to the solenoid wire. I don't believe that to be stock. Maybe some kind of a hidden anti-theft situation, or possibly a remote start.

I put a heat shrink solder connector over that connection and the new starter in and she fired right up!
