Noisy rear end

Just went through the same scenario. My pinion bearing was in really piss poor condition so I replaced the entire center section. No more noise and is now quiet as a mouse.

How hard was this job? And what did you replace exactly

I had it done. They replaced the entire center section, and all related bearings. Mine had an open differential and was replaced with a limited slip (3:73). Guy who did it is a pretty well known off roader. Jason from Acme 4x4 here in Ohio.
Unbelievable difference, and his price was so low I couldn’t believe it.

I'm glad you got your issue solved, and I don't mean to make light of your issue, but every time I see this thread title, all I can think is "hell, I have a noisy rear end too, when I eat beans for dinner!"

That being said it does sound more like a bearing issue than a gear issue. If you haven’t already ordered one, I’d suggest using a Lubelocker gasket (with no RTV)… Reusable and very good seal. What you could do if very careful is to lift the rear up on jack stands and have someone press the gas to speed it up with a mechanics stethoscope… move it to each bearing location to see which is loudest and you should be able to pinpoint you problem child.


And for Gods sake if you do the steps above, chalk both the front wheels front and back! Also I’m not suggesting its the safest thing in the world to do, nor am I taking responsibility for any accident lol

Thanks for the reply, I am going to tear into the rear diff soon, Hopefully that's the problem.
