Operation Phoenix

This is getting interesting. Who's gonna swap in Rick's 5.9?
For anyone's consideration, I like my Golen stroker and it was an easy direct bolt in. BUT... It was expensive and the power is good but not great. Next time, I'll V8 swap (or just stick with the 4.0).

And you could do the budget rebuild on the 5.9 or go all out and use the stroker making it a 6.7.... Let's talk some serious low end grunt...

But Yes I'll agree that your Golen stroker is impressive....

But as they say there is no replacement for displacement....

Dodge rated the stock 5.9 @
5.9 torque curve.webp

But most people reported closer to 400HP and 450TQ and it was easy to get more out of one too.....

But back to Mac's deal...

As Mike said a stroker 4.0 is the easiest since it all just bolts up... But if you're going to do this even if you're just doing a Stage I or II stroker IMO you're foolish not to do it RIGHT the first time...
If I'd spent an extra $1500 when I'd done my first Magnum swap I wouldn't have ever had all the issues I had with my V-8... So don't skimp is what I'm saying... Even if you have to wait another 2-3 months to do the stroker then wait.

If you decided you wanted the V-8 it's the one I'd bought to build the new stroker after my old block had cracked. So it's now just sitting here torn apart....
And from the visual inspection it appears the heads are good and not cracked... Cylinder walls all looked good also...

So new cam to make it breath better and then just basic machine work on the block & heads and you're golden... And I've got headers for it too...

Mostly we're talking about while you're in there stuff. If this motor was known to be running and you're not putting in new pistons, going to a stroker doesn't make alot of sense.
The Stage 1 Clegg kit plus injectors and balancing and a crank pulley is $1933.

You can find the 3.895" Scat crank on Summit as a stand alone at $726. I feel like these were like $400 not that long ago, but line go up. You can absolutely reuse your rods, and buy the appropriate piston pin height for this setup at the same price as a stock height piston. I don't know of cast pistons at this height, but hypereutectic are the same either way. You can probably still get a 4.2L 3.895" crank out of a junkyard 4.2L for cheap which is how the whole stroker 4.6L thing started. YJs and a bunch of Jeeps with 258s had this crank. You just have to deal with a difference in the snout. The balancer/pulley is one of those things where if you're good with what you've got, you can reuse it. Balancing is just a good idea on a rotating assembly.

Add in a MPVI3 at $400 plus credits and a Flyin Ryan tune.
An FRP tune plus MPVI3 is not required at all. It's usually one OR the other. A 4.6L with 24lb injectors is a well known formula which likely just doesn't need any tuning. Tuning isn't mandatory and lots of people just dropped that combo from Golen or Titan or S&J in without a tune. ie @Woodrow

Need to see if I can even find a machine shop in the area to deck the block and head.
I wasn't sure if you were planning to take it to a machine shop to have the block cleaned out first as is pretty common and while it's in there alot of people have the measurements taken and adjust bore and deck height.

The Cometic thin MLS gasket will likely take care of what you need. These usually 0.027" and cost the same as a stock 0.040/0.043/0.044" gasket. That depth in the hole issue is true of the stock 4.0L too.

If you really want to go bare bones you can. You can just do pistons, rings, used crank, bearings, injectors, ball hone the bore and put it back together. The only delta vs a stock rebuild is the cost of the crank. Reuse everything that can be resused. This doesn't have to be a $3k project and alot of people have done it on the cheap.

Can we please just get him to get his brake pads on the correct side first?

Well now I can't help[ him out here.... I seem to "F"up stuff now and then too...

But he finally did have it tuned on a dyno... I'd have to look at his thread to tell you what he gained.

I seem to remember the same thing happening when the switched from MPVI2 to the MPVI3 also. And while I agree you don't "need" a tune but it's been shown in butt dynos that even doing a canned tune has helped. Not sure if FRP does canned tunes for stroker engines or not though.

It took me a while to get the hang of tuning the JTEC+ PCM mostly because the HPTuners Dodge Forum is populated with a bunch of gatekeepers refusing to share info. I'm happy to share what I learned.

Out of curiosity and desire to capture the wideband O2 readings, I switched back to the stock tune at one point. It was shocking how much I'd picked up with tuning as I made my changes by little steps over 5 or 6 months. The TJ felt like it was asleep when I went back to the stock tune.

Then I tuned my dad's 06 LJ with the NGC3 to learn how the other TJ PCM family is tuned. He's happy with it, but is never realy pushing it.

At some point I'll schedule some time at a local dyno. I've got an interest in looking at my current tune vs stock. I also want to look at the CAI vs stock intake. Those are both things I can change over in a 1 or 2 hour session. I just haven't had the free time.

I dug up that thread from @Woodrow and it looked like 7hp and 10ft-lbs with the tune with lots of area under the curve, but a much more stable lambda. That area under the curve really adds up even if the peak numbers aren't huge. I got alot more all around benefit from dialing in the timing than from fuel.

That’s right. Unfortunately, I didn’t get much seat time before the rig went in the garage for a bunch of stuff I’m still working on so I can’t say too much about the change.

Except that there’s a lot more change in the works!

And as much as I love what @Woodrow is doing just south of me...I don't want my Jeep down for months on end. We use my Jeep to find trash in the woods...and I drive it to work every day. The Jeep gets .2 mpg better than my truck (and won't cost $80k plus to replace.)

Hence the spare engine. I can take my time and save up and do things right.

Meanwhile I've completed my preparation for Sand Hollow...

Looks like you have plenty of space for another jeep. Think of how much more trash you could haul in an LJ...

I see room for a golf simulator!

If he does get one he has to get the one that tilts with the lie and also has the arm that puts the balls on the tee.

I played Pebble Beach at one of our vendors offices in Korea that had one like that and it was really fun.

Golf = waste of a long range rifle range

Or

Golf = waste of a great cow pasture
