Play In Steering Column

My '05 has had a slight bumping sensation in the steering wheel when going around turns. While removing the steering column in the process of doing a heater core replacement, I noticed that there's a bit of play where the steering column goes through the firewall. Does anyone know if this play is normal or could this be the source of the bumping?

Does your TJ have the adjustable steering wheel positioning lever on the left side of the steering column ?
IF your Jeep does; make sure the lever is in the full locked position.

It’s very general and recommended checking the steering wrack that is not found on a TJ. I can agree.
