Problems with the PCM

I'm from Germany, so I want to apologize in advance for my bad English😉
But now to my inquiry or story with my newly acquired Jeep Wrangler TJ 2.4 from 2005.
I bought the TJ with my son a few months ago because we wanted to get it running again together. After weeks of work, it was then rust-free again and optically and mechanically ok again. It ran and drove perfectly again, even the Prins gas system was ok.
Unfortunately, after cleaning the spark plugs, we swapped the ignition cables from 1st and 2nd, so that the engine initially ran rough and after removing the 1st spark plug, there was a short circuit and the engine stopped completely. Then the engine would not start and the engine light came on. Nothing happened after turning the ignition key. Also, the internal memory is reporting the P0688 trouble code in the odometer.
My local mechanic checked this but couldn't access the PCM even though the power supply is fine. He said it's the PCM. I then removed it and sent it to a dealer who tested the PCM for weeks and concluded that it was beyond repair.
After a long research and rummaging through various Wrangler sites, I found my way to you in the hope that you could help me.
Do you have a solution for me or can you give me a tip?
I have already sent an inquiry to wranglerfix and received an offer for a new PCM.
I have already read many positive reports here in the forum, but I am still unsure whether the device will really work or whether I will have to visit my Jeep workshop again? Also the payment processing and delivery to Germany and the customs duty is still questionable?
Do you have experience and can you tell me how expensive such a new PCM can be?
I know there are many questions I ask myself, but I would really like to successfully complete the project with my son and finally enjoy the jeep in our nature.
Unfortunately there are not many working Jeep TJs left in Germany and we would be very happy to have this car.
I hope you can give me some advice and information!
Thank you very much!

Hello,
Unfortunately, I didn't get any feedback, but I would like to describe a positive course.

I contacted mark from wranglerfix in the meantime and ended up ordering a new pcm from him.

the delivery via ups to germany only took a week and i was able to install the pcm directly.
my jeep started right away and ran perfectly. After 5 months of standing still and walking around through a few workshops, I can finally experience my jaunts with the jeep again.

many thanks again to mark and wranglerfix for this great work and solution.
I just want to recommend you!

Welcome to the forum. Apologies for the lack of response, but sometimes these one post threads can easily slip through unnoticed. Often a bump or two is required.

Please stick around and let us know how things progress with the Jeep. You will definitely find a bunch of great knowledge here to help address the inevitable problems with an 18 year old rig. Being in Germany, as you have already found, you will often need to get creative to keep the rig running.

Do you have places to wheel where you are in Germany?

Thank you very much, I will definitely stay with you and carefully monitor possible problems and, if necessary, ask for opinions and help again.

i live in a very rural area and can at least drive on the nearby fields and forests.
But there are also special closed-off areas for off-road drivers throughout Germany. however, these are usually chargeable. 😩

I think the time differential caught a lot of us asleep.

I have personally met members of the German rocket team here in Huntsville- I’ll never forget the impression one made on me-

I asked him why was everything they produced so well-designed and engineered, like Mercedes - He said in Germany from the time you are small child there is constant emphasis on doing things right. That cultural mindset is impressive and something to be proud of.

My dad said Germans could survive on a flat rock.

Germany has seen a lot, but through it all you have gained the worlds’ respect.

Same in my part of the U.S. Most of the wheelin’ in the eastern half is all private parks. To get to public lands these days you have to head out west.
