Rack above spare tire

Looking at getting the DirtWorx rear tire carrier and I'm debating on how useful the rack mounted above the spare tire really is. Any thoughts?

I don't have the Dirtworx version, but I've used the one I have several times. It's easy enough to remove and install that I only install it when needed.

What do you normally carry there?

I've carried firewood, a cooler and a large waterproof gear bag.

Anything you don't want inside or have room for inside.
A regular hitch rack doesn't work very well off road.

I made my own a few weeks ago. I made it big enough to fit a husky tote or my cooler. I used to have one that I made that went into the hitch, but it would contact the ground when I was doing harder trails. If you have a welder it's an easy project.

Most of the time I have a cooler up there, but sometimes on long trips I'll stack the flat type gas can carriers on the rack in addition to the standard gas cans on the sides. Just remember that's a lot of weight up really high if you get into an off-camber situation.

I had the Dirtworx rack above the tire carrier on my YJ. Rack was very useful for hauling tools and parts into the Rubicon trail.

I try and keep light bulky things up there like sleeping bags, clothes, etc. and the heavy items inside and low
