Ratcheting noise

I have a ratchiting noise xoming from the rear end i think? only in 1st gear only from a stop never does it in any other gear or when i just start driving. Info is dana super 35 with 30 spline chroms and air locker. Only been on the jeep 6000 miles i was thinking rear carier bearing?

Can't say, as the only locker I've ever had fail was a detroit that kind of made a really loud "bang" and stopped working. But that detroit also made a ratcheting sound going around corners with your foot off the gas. Might email the manufacturer and ask if yours is supposed to make noise. Maybe it's set up a little tight or something.

True that. But if it's not very loud, you may only hear it starting out from a stop.

Maybe. Is there a possibility of the locker not fully disengaging? Been a long time since I handled one so I couldn't say if that is even possible.

Sure, it's possible, but then it wouldn't ratchet. But if it was "sticky" and the teeth were still rub bind togather...maybe?

I noticed it gets louder when it waems up wonder if ot could be the cv in the drive shaft

A carrier bearing won't ratchet, it will grind while turning generally. Could it be a front wheel bearing that sounds likeit is from the rear? If you are certain it is from the rear end it would be a good idea to pull the diff cover for a look.

Hard to say without hearing it firsthand. When I think of "ratcheting" I hear "click clack click clack." How would you describe the sound?

Same way you discribe ot click clack clack clack ots driving me nuts . Im gonna pull the drive shaft and dif cover this weekend

My guess is a dried up ujoint, or center ball in the CV joint.

I know that noise, and you described it perfectly as a 'ratcheting' sound, but it only happens for me when I really jump on the accelerator from a dead stop and only began after I installed 32" tires. If I go easy as I take off, not a sound. So that's what I'm doing til I put the jeep away for the winter (CT puts a de-icing solution on the road that chews up frames) but I'm very interested to hear what you find when you investigate, as I'll likely have to do the same to get mine right.

I replaced all the ujoints today and its much lighter but still there. I am taking the drive shaft it to have the cv rebuilt. Gonna pull the dif cover tomarow morning and check backlash.its just to hot to do it afyer 9 am

I had a fear that it had something to do with the CV, but I'm hoping the rebuild cures the problem for you (us, lol!)
