When it comes time to install the pinion bearing on the pinion , you might want to avoid turning your wheel face down, sitting the race with the bearing in it , and driving the pinion into the bearing with a wood block and hammer ,utilizing a hole in the rim to achieve the depth of drive .

The words "high pitched whine " will come into play later. Not much later .

This is one reason I didn't do my re-gear myself after all. I'd need to acquire a bunch of special tools to do the job, and I just had a strong feeling I'd mess it up the first time.

It requires enough special tools that would negate any savings if you bought them.

There is a thread on here with a link to an article about how to regear yourself.... And just reading the article gives you a pretty good idea how much you really need to understand.

Dealing with right angle helical gears, that basically have two points of entry and one point of exit, is fairly technical in terms of setup.

My Jeep is sitting at the shop during the last of the best weather of the year, and I'm pretty sure the ultimate conclusion is a damaged pinion bearing , and I hope not too much damage to my bank account .

The biggest consolation was the fact that I made the leap and did finally come to the realization of what it means to regear, performance wise.
