Regearing, part 2

Working on my rear axle, finally.

Got it to where I don't know what to do. It's a decent pattern, but I'm not super happy with the inconsistency between the coast and drive sides. Coast side seems pretty good, the drive side seems deep. This might be where used gears bite me.

This set of pictures of with 0.007" backlash and a 0.050 pinion depth.

The trial before was at 0.008 back lash and 0.047. Pinion depth... This seems too shallow.

Just for kicks and giggles, I went the other way and tried to bury the pinion. That worked, so I know I'm in the ballpark. This is with 0.060 pinion depth, and a little tight on backlash (0.005)

Kinda curious what the hive mind thinks?

Setting up used gears can be a PITA.

Just used gears...they probably have less than 5,000 miles on them. I got them from @psrivats when he went to 5.38's...and the 4.88's were not in all that long.

Yukon. I'm going to try and build a shim stack between 47 and 50 tonight and see what happens. I'll clean off the goop and try to see if I can read the original and if it had that weird offset drive to coast. I looked at them when I installed, but it's tough to read, because they have so little use.

with 5k miles on them, they are broken in and have some initial wear, so getting a good read on the drive side may be a little difficult.

That makes sense. I had heard to use the coast side, but the Why was always a little foggy. I figured it had to do with wear, but it seems like you would get a good pattern, if you get it where its "worn" in to, no?

The first pattern looks really good. If you mix a few drops of gear oil into your paint, it'll give you a clearer view. Also lots of pressure turning against each other.

When using used gears, I always try to get the same backlash as before, tends to help with any gear noise.

I think the setup at 0.008 backlash and 0.047 pinion looks best and not shallow at all. I still see paint at the top of the tooth and looks centered on both drive and coast side.

I mixed some gear oil (actually ATF) into the paint already. I'm using a piece of 1 x ash to load the ring (wedging it between the housing and the ring). I'm putting as much pressure as I can against it.

I've got two votes for 0.050 depth and one for 0.047. I'll post back later with something inbetween.

I think you're a bit deep in the first pics. I would shallow it out say 5 thou and check. You'll most likely be somewhere in between that. You're close for sure.

Couple more patterns. One that was 0.045" pinion depth (based on @hosejockey61's recommendation) and one at 0.048" pinion depth.

First the 0.045" pinion depth. I had just over 0.007" backlash (call it 0.0075). My paint started to dry a little, so the transfer is not great...but to me, I'd call this shallow. The pattern looks half moon shaped instead of more like a watermelon. I can see paint on the both the face and root, but the shape throws me.

I ran this one, based on the recommendations of the Gearing Technical Help FB page

I like the shape of this one better...It seems more centered and the shape is more representative of the diagrams I see online.
