Rocky Mountain Billy Goat Build

Are you planning on painting the skid itself too?

Nah, I like the aluminum look. I may look into the protective coats for it - but haven't researched enough to know. Any opinions on protecting it?

What? Don't you have a son for stuff like that? I think you mean G has some painting to do.

Haha, I am trying to keep his brain cells in tact for now!

I think I see how everything goes on except these 4 items, anyone mind educating me to where they go?

Here’s the rest of the layout

The shims make up for the added height of the “frame wrap” part. My early version only had three, but the later has a different frame bolt pattern so it looks like it has 4. You sandwich them between the skid and the frame so that the skid doesn’t get shmooshed into the frame.

Slap it on and enjoy :)

Im hoping I can yolo it like this until finances are ready for the UCAs and DS. In the LJ I’m going to risk it since it’s approaching the off season and I want it before Chinaman!

Since fixing the stalling issue wasn’t a huge financial investment, I had some budget to burn. I added in a hand throttle as an immediately useful upgrade. I’ve not decided on the material yet, however I’m planning to wrap the cable line down the shifter.

And wrapped up the painting of the savvy skid components

This is the last planned big project for a bit, unless some shortcomings become apparent on the trail or I pick items off the list.

Are any of the stock transmission mount parts reused with the Savvy system? TIA.

I’m hoping to tackle this over the course of the week, but from what I see the only thing reused is the bushing that the exhaust hanger attaches to.

Thank you. I threw my stock skid and transmission mount in the metal recycle bin when I installed the Nth skid in 2005.

That’s correct, just finished the Savvy skid tonight so it’s fresh in my mind. Feel free to message me if you run into any problems I can try to help.

I’m going to punt a little bit on the Savvy skid install. It looks like even on an LJ it’s worth getting the CAs and DS sooner than later, I’d rather have it done right the first time than need to adjust a half dozen times. At a minimum I want the rear upper CAs and cash for both the DS and exhaust work.

Since my son is back in school, that may be a mid to late winter install.

I think you will need a full set of Control arms and the driveshaft for the Savvy Skid. I had to adjust my arms a bunch after installing it. It really does raise the transfer case A LOT.

The more I read the more that seems to be the case. A few LJ folks seem to get away with it - but the compromise to strength of the joints and risk of NVH doesn’t seem worth it to me.

I think your making the right choice. I would be shocked. If anyone was able to make it work without control arms and a rear driveshaft.

For some reason I thought you already had adjustable control arms. Good call then, I dont see a way around it without them.

I had to tweak my exhaust quite a bit I recall. I ended up going to Castillo's muffler in Aurora (I want to say Colfax and Havana off the top of my head). Small, family run shop. Their prices were damn good though. Ive been there a few times.
