Hi All, would love some advice. I have a 1998 Sahara Wrangler, I had brought it in due to inconsistent idle issues/choking out.
What happens:
1) Start the ignition
2) Revs high, around 1500 rpms, and if I just sit there, it fluctuates.
3) Put it in drive or reverse, and it drops super low, sounds like it's going to choke out (and did, once).
4) When I'm done driving and put it in park, it revs high again around 1500 rpms, and then eventually drops down.
5) Also, when riding the brake or in drive, super slow, idle only (like bumper to bumper traffic on a highway) I get the choking out sounds.
I've brought it in four times and the following work has been done:
1) First time I brought it in, it was throwing a TPS code, so we replaced that.
2) Second time I brought it in (and since) there are no codes. We replaced the IAC valve.
3) Third time I brought it in, we replaced the exhaust intake gasket and manifold gasket, catalytic converter (unrelated issue), and the exhaust pipe.
4) Fourth time I brought it in, they ran every diagnostic and nothing was coming back. Mechanic is stumped. Meanwhile sputtering/choking happened the entire drive home in highway traffic. They cleaned the throttle body, and they think that helped improve it somewhat.
The crank sensor was checked, the vacuum was checked and the idle was reset.
When I picked it up, the mechanic said it could be the ECM, or he talked to someone and that person said every time they've run into this, they've replaced the throttle body and it fixes the issue. Both of those fixes are basically wild ass guesses. With a 28-year-old Jeep, I don't love the idea of throwing money at it without confidence that will be the fix. But I also love this car, it's the only car I've ever had, got it new at 16-years-old, so I am still inclined to fix it.
Any advice here? I have seen that Flagship One has pre-programmed ECMs for a decent price, the replacement itself doesn't seem to be too complicated if the ECM is pre-programmed. I could either bring it in once I have it, or even attempt to do it myself. Is there anything else I should be considering?
