I'm in the market for an XJ for one of my kids. Since when have these started going up in price. I remember the resale of the XJ was always alot lower than a tj.
A couple years ago I could pick up a very good used one for around 3500.00.
Now they are going for 7000.00 and up with 200k miles on them.

Not just Xj’s it’s nearly every used car.
I know. It's the new car shortage BS. No chips. No cars.
The dealership I was at, was selling over 200 used cars a month. The sales people were calling leasing customers and offering to buy them out of their lease just so they could flip the cars.
My mother just bought her Honda off lease. The dealer is now offering her 5k more just to get it back.

I was going to buy one in February 2020, then waited thinking people wouldn't want/need cars... Boy was I wrong. They've been rocketing since, like nearly every other used and new car.

Want to sell it?

Long answer but ... no.

I bought a 4 dr. XJ Laredo new in 1990 and a 1995 2 dr. later. I put a lot of great miles on them. They're both gone now. In 2015, with a 2003 TJ & a 2004 LJ sitting in the driveway I got the XJ itch again. Within a few months I picked up the one above, a 1989 2 dr. Cherokee Limited and a 1988 Comanche Eliminator. Both required some work but no big deal. The work continues.

I'm committed for the long term so they're not for sale. I told my wife she can choose which one to bury me in (I'm old) provided she promises to continue driving the other one.

I didn't pay anything close to the prices posted above for the 2 of them together. Prices have gone up but there really are good deals out there if you're patient.

btw ... here's the other one ...

We bought ours in 2013. Had to talk the wife into getting a 2-door. Now I can't talk her out of it. It was stolen a couple years back. We got it back the same day, and I've since rebuilt the front suspension, brake system, and mounted new Toyo A/t III tires on Canyons. Here's a couple of older pics...

Don't you know it! ;) Ours is a '96, btw. The thief (who did get arrested, I'm happy to say) put a couple of medium-sized dents in the driver's door , and broke the center cap off the right, front wheel (???). Also stole the stereo.
I really miss mine, also stolen right off driveway, 10 ft from neighbor's bedroom window. Today's thieves just put 'em up on a flat bed in under 5 and haul 'em off. Wreckers never get pulled over for loud pipes. The '87 with Dana 44 and fiberglass rear hatch is a prize to find. Mine had 285k, factory ordered; Wheeled hard and long. That unit had more heart than I ever thought possible. Was just about to put in a third interior. Peugeot 5 sp gear box never gave me the slightest trouble. Throwout bearing fork was another story. The fourth one I had put in was really beefed up. Reinforced and stiffened unibody at 140,000 miles. That XJ was the best vehicle I ever owned and that includes my proper TJR! I miss that Cherokee.

XJs were dirt cheap forever so broke kids bought them up, modified them like fools, and thrashed them them into piles of broken junk. Now the few nice survivors command real dollars.

Same thing happened to solid axle Toyota trucks.
This.

They are great snow vehicles, so most have rotted out by now. I've owned 3, but they all rusted out. Finding a clean one is next to impossible now.

I imagine the high price is due to how few are left. Look at them for sale, there are really not all that many. I'd love to grab up a clean one from 97-01 but I fear it will never happen. It doesn't help that I'm focused more on the ones with AX15s and not the AW4. Even if I broaden my years to include down to 91, there's still not much out there that 1) fits the price range and 2) is clean enough to justify the higher price range it may bring.
