I'm going to remove my skid plate soon to change my transmission filter. Do I need to put some supports under the transmission when I drop the skid plate or will it be fine?

Go with the jack stand and a nice stable board on top. Personally, I don't trust a jack to positively hold something up if I'm under it..

That's completely true. Can't be too safe when it comes to things like this.
