Spare tire mounting question

Hey everyone,

I was having trouble mounting a spare 31x10.5. The snubbers were too big and I was having trouble getting it on the studs. I eventually aired it down to 8psi or so and was able to work it on there. The snubbers sit really tight at the moment. Would it harm the tire and/or tailgate when I air it back up to 25-30 psi?

I wouldn’t risk it. Damage to the tailgate or hinges could result.

You can remove the rubbers and sand/cut them down a bit to reduce the pressure. I sanded mine down an inch or so for my spare tire carrier bumper install.

Not sure I would force the fit like that. You could cut down the snubbers, or use longer studs with a spacer. I replaced with an aftermarket carrier which then required adding length to the snubbers (used hockey pucks).

I would not do that, may bend your tail gate.

Thanks everyone. I do have a spacer but it left me a 2 inch gap so I tried this way. I’ll go back to the spacer and extending the bumpers. Thanks!

Interesting idea.
I’ve used hockey pucks to extend the stock bumpers but never considered this idea,

My Jeep had 31 x 10.5 tires mounted on OEM Ravine wheels, when I bought it. The PO spaced the wheel out with a couple of big spacers. It did not rattle.

Personally, I'd add some washers to the tire carrier studs long before going through all the trouble of adding the spacer and snubber spacers. As long as there's enough threads left to engage the lug nuts for the spare to secure it well.

Very good point. If it's just off by a bit. I'd go this route. Making the rubber stops is easy. But washers are a whole lot easier.

Thanks for all the ideas. Unfortunately the washer idea wouldn’t work for me. The studs on the carrier aren’t long enough to get it on there. I’m going to try a 1 inch wheel spacer before extending the bumpers or doing the mallet idea.
