I just installed a JB conversions super short sye kit and rebuilt the 231 transfer case. speedometer initially works for a little while then quits. if i shut off for a 1/2 hour or so it then repeats problem. any suggestions?

check the VSS on the transfer case.. i had an erratic speedometer and my VSS was toast. popped a new one on and fixed the issue

I don't understand how the speedometer is working at all after installing a super-short SYE kit. Did your SSSYE kit not remove the speedometer gear housing? Once a SSSYE is installed I thought you had to convert to an electronic speedometer system. Or did you install an electronic speedometer system?

This is my understanding of the SSYE as well. It removes the speedometer gear housing I thought.

lmao shows how much i know about sssye :ROFLMAO:

Gear set is removed and replaced with a tone ring and hall sensor. If it's reading erratically, chances are your yoke is not tightened enough. IIRC jb states 220 ft lbs.

As mentioned, you need an intermediate to correct the signal. I went with this one:

I'm in the middle of my install so I can't talk to how well it works but it's had good reviews on the forums.
I've done several of the JB SSYE kits and never needed a speedohealer .
It was plug and play.
If your speedo is working intermittently chances are the Yoke nut is not tight enough.

Can you explain to us how that works? Doesn't a SSSYE eliminate the speedometer gear housing? If so how do you get the speedometer calibrated without an electronic calibrator, like a speedo healer?
A standard non super-short SYE kit does not eliminate the speedometer gear housing but I thought super-short SYE kits did.

To correct the speedo after a gear or tire change then yes, you need a device like the speedohealer. But, like I mentioned, if the speedo isn't working chances are the ring is not receiving enough torque from the yoke nut

A super short SYE does eliminate the speedo gear housing, but the electronic sensor that replaces it plugs right into the OEM wiring. A speedo healer (or equivalent) is only needed to compensate for gear/tire changes. Its just the electronic version of replacing the gear with one with a different tooth count.
As taken from the SSSYE page on JB Conversions:

"An added benefit of the new electrical design is in the flexibility of speedometer calibration. Signal converters from Dakota Digital, Inc. and Superlift Suspensions can be easily connected into the Jeep wiring loom (only 3 wires) for easy adjustability.

** It is important to note that the signal converter is not necessary to have a functioning speedometer with our new kit. It is only necessary for adjustability necessitated by the changing of tires and/or ring and pinion gears."

Missed the intermittent part, was thinking correction. This is the last warning in the JB Conversion - be sure to get the yoke to 200 ft lbs.

I've read that the hall effect sensor will act as one of the speedo gears - I don't know what tooth number. If that matches up with your setup, it's possible to not need a speedohealer.

Erratic speedo is not enough torque on yoke nut. Friction is the only thing turning the tone ring.

Its very simple, your stock speed sensor/ speedo gear is replaced with a tone ring and a hall effect sensor.
The tone ring is not splined, it is basically sandwiched between the yoke and main shaft.
If the nut is not properly torqued, the tone ring will slip and the speedo will be erratic.
It is plug and play, now if your running larger tires and you wish to recalibrate for that, then you would require a speedo heeler type devise.
The other reason he may have an erratic speedo could be that the connector on the chassis harness could have corrosion or a spread terminal.
