Starter grinding (new starter and new flywheel)

I'd leave the ignition off. We're looking for a grinding noise...no need to start the Jeep.

And any bit of wire will do. 6" of 12-16 gauge is easy to hang on to.

Make sure the Jeep is in neutral and you've got the emergency brake on JIC.

Was told the starter could not be retracting back fast enough causing it to catch on the flywheel for too long, or the timing is off.
Considering it’s been 2 starters having this issue I’m leaning towards the timing option. Thoughts on the timing idea ? Idk much about the timing adjustment. Everything I look up it is showing a timing chain.

Timing is controlled by the PCM.

Further...timing isn't relevant to the flywheel spinning or the starter engagement.

How'd the experiment go with running the starter with a jumper wire go? Did it make noise?

opting to just get a new ignition switch and see if that works. Tested my battery and instead of being at 12v it’s at 6v, so perhaps the switch is sticking like you guys mentioned and drawing the battery.

I think their logic behind the timing was that if the timing was off the starter was grabbing or retracting at the wrong time causing it to grind.

Going to put a new switch and charged battery in tonight see if that will fix it.

Do you have the original starter?

-Mac

No, but I’ll upload a picture of it. It was ruined by the flywheel. I should know a little more tomorrow. I’m going to have someone look at it.
Other than the chance I had bad luck getting 2 bad new starters i’ve kinda ran out of ideas.

The original starter could easily be fixed by a good auto electric shop.

I wish more people would do that, we are gradually seeing all our local alternator/starter shops closing up. You can get a much better unit that way than a parts store replacement. One of our shops got smart and expanded into making custom cables, selling batteries and all kinds of parts for automotive audio and accessory wiring and they are still doing a good business.

This is one example of a type of manufacturing/service business that is already here in our country and doesn't need anything to expand and prosper except people to stop buying imported crap. Spread the word.

As Mac explained, the only thing timing can do is either cause it to start or long crank and no start. There is nothing to do with the timing that causes or can cause a starter to grind.

I'd hunt down a good used OEM flywheel, find an OEM starter and get it rebuilt and solve the problem. If you do go the flywheel route, do not let them send it out for resurfacing unless they explain the flywheel is not flat and know what that means.

Yeah I got it back from the mechanic today. Said the ignition lock cylinder was binding and was causing some issues. Other issues like the engine over heating.
But I turned it on and it was still rattling like a jar of coins. He told me it was normal for a new starter?? I’ll add a video.

idk if you'll be able to hear it but the end of the engine turning over sounds like coins rattling in a jar, honestly the best way I can describe it. noise is coming from the starter.

I wonder if the closed nose cone vs. the OEM original open nose cone makes a difference in seating properly ?

That is crazy talk. I would look for another mechanic as that makes zero sense.

I don’t think he was saying it was related to the grinding, my jeep was overheating a couple months ago I thought I fixed that though.
He thought the sound my starter was making was fine so he didn’t troubleshoot that at all.

This didn't convey the same message.

Okay. to clarify,He fixed valid issues he saw unrelated to the starter but told me the noise was normal to him for a new starter so didn’t fix anything related to the starter.
