Started tear down on the xd 9000i, I don’t know what looks good vs not but so far I think it’s looking promising!

The grease looks good from what I can see. Take each of the gears out and look at all of it. If they need anymore grease you may just need to add some. This is what mine looked like. I don’t even think I added any grease.
On the other end clean up the commutator.

I have a similar coolant spatter on my hood that is way overdue to be cleaned off. Encourage you to attack it before it bakes in like mine did over thousands of miles...
Winch looks like a great project! I'm hoping to pick up a cheap used option too in order to learn the winch internals. Feels like you area a better user when you know how/why it works.

That one looks cool. Love the finned motor housing. These winches are fast IMO! Great pieces of equipment.
I bought a whole tube of the right grease. When I get home tomorrow I can post up what kind it is.

Early xd9000i are the best looking imo, if the motor looks too bad I’m gonna talk to @Blackjack on swapping in the newer motor and gear box that you have…. I wonder if I can keep the heat sink
