So i started to get a metalic gear spinning noise under my 2003 tj sport. The front driveshaft double cardan joint was bad so i was just going to drive without the driveshaft for awhile. When i did this i started getting a strange spinning metal rattle from around the front differential, but couldn't find anything when it was opened up. Anyone have any ideas as to where to check next? It makes the noise when accelerating and coasting at any speed above 15mph and gets worse if i go over any bumps.

Hey I know this is a somewhat old thread, but did you ever find the issue? I am having something similar happen to me.
With only one post, my guess is we'll never hear from this person again.
If I had to guess, I'd say it's a u-joint.

That is what I was thinking, I'm not super mechanically inclined though and it just sounded very metallic I wasn't too sure what a bad U-joint sounds like.
