Stripped Nutserts for Transfer Case Skid

I'll wager the grease monkey at the muffler shop used an air impact gun turned up to full strength. Too many commercial shops do not take their profession seriously. Speed is their only motivation, not perfection. The torque wrenches stay in their tool boxes.

Nutserts arrived today.

1. Make DIY nutsert tool
http://www.justaddrocks.com/Nutsert_Instructions.htm2. Grind down nutsert flanges
3. Punch though nutsert barrels and fish out with magnet
4. Insert nutsert with tool and torque to 50 ft lbs.
5. Paint frame and nutsert area.

Worked like a charm; stripped nutsert problem solved. Thank you @mrblaine

I might have overlooked it, but where did you get the nutserts from please.

I see how the replacement nut serts install. That's pretty creative. I have a stripped one on my 03 Sahara back cornerand its missing the spacer. Evidently it has a transfer case lowering kit?

It is stripped enough that a 1/2-13 tap just slides throught the nut sert. I have a 5/8-18 tap. Do you think there is enough material there to tap it 5/8-18 Mr. Blaine? It takes a 37/64 drill for the tap. I don't want to make the frame hole too big.

What is the diameter of the hole in the frame for the nut sert? Thanks

I would start a new thread and tag Blaine by using the @ in front of his name.

Frame hole size for early and late nutserts is the same, .625 or 5/8". Just replace the nutsert and don't complicate things.

There is not enough material to run a 5/8 tap through.

Yes I think a 1/2-20 might have worked if it wasn't so far gone. Glad to see a company making a well thought out fix!

Do you guys just leave the left over bits of nutserts rattling around in the frame rails?
I did. But It only took a few minutes with a magnet. Had it taken longer or required more effort, they may have stayed there.

Pfff nut serts.... Real men drill holes in frame

My favorite is when they drill all the way through the frame and put in long bolts with no crush tubes.
I remember a rear shock thread where someone was posting that as the greatest solution ever.

A side story...I was out and about one day, at the shop of a locally well know Jeep mechanic. He had someone there that he was doing some welding for. Dude was making a Jeep hauler on the back of his tractor (semi truck). Decent idea, for a long haul. So I was checking it out and the guy had some 5" tubing that stacked on top of the truck chassis (which is a c channel). He then drilled holes and thru bolted the tubing to the c channel without any to of reinforcement for the bolt to clamp against (1/2” bolts, iirc).

I mentioned to him that it would be a good idea to put some spacers in there, so the bolt wouldn't just compress the tubing. He told me, "it's 1/4" wall, it's going to be fine.".

Yup...OK buddy. No problem.
