Stroker vs re-gear

How many jelly beans fit in the jar? True or False?

Game over. You win. That's why I want both. Keep my 4.56's and add a stroker.

No wait... I want yours. Far and away my favorite build. Just sayin..

I'd say if you don't do both then you are leaving something on the table.

Looking at it as one or the other is silly.

Start with one while planning on both.

I think we all need to establish that all of this discussion has revolved around on-road driving. There simply is no substitute for a proper crawl ratio off road be that from axle or transfer case gearing, period. No amount of HP is going to make up for that and the majority of us are practically limited by NP231 transfer cases. So gearing.

The driveability of a centrifugal supercharger or even a turbo will be great on road. Normal city driving, cruising at 2500rpm on the highway, all of it. Anything anybody thinks otherwise is from lack of firsthand experience and regurgitating common internet "knowledge."

would you rather crawl with a 4.0 and 3.07s or a 4 cyl and 4.10's? does your answer change if 4.0 has 3.73?

On what tire? But the 4 banger either way. It's much more about speed and control than it is power when you are doing that.

i see. you are saying that at idle speed the value of going slower exceeds any benefit from more power, yes?

For off road crawling over stuff in 4 lo, very much so, yep.

do you care about compression braking? i wonder if a 4.0 and 3.73 might crawl a smidge faster than a 4 cyl, 4.10 but still have a bit more compression braking once you get over 1000 rpm or so?

i can def see 3.07 gears sucking ass any time you need to go slow. and those older automatics don't have really steep first gears like the new 6, 8, 10 speed stuff. so i am starting to see your point.

I think 3.73s vs 4.10s are so close the speed difference would be negligible and the power of the 4.0 would win. Same concept with a stroker vs 4.0 I think. Engine breaking isn't much of a factor for me for what I've wheeled.

yeah i end up coming down thousands of feet in elevation crawling along in the snow ... engine braking is important since it keeps you from overheating the brakes. but there are no obstacles to climb over, just deadfall you cut with a chainsaw to clear the way.

No truer words ^^^

I don't do any crawling.. Oh wait.. the Long Island Expressway, The Sunken Meadow Parkway and... This is Long Island. We all darn near died with Superstorm Sandy closed every exit off LI.

Anyway.. this makes sense even to me.

Its a transmission, tire size and terrain dependant question also.

My take though is i don't care what gear ratio i don't want a 4cyl unless it has stock tires and its just for in town cruising and dirt road use.

They are horribly underpowered in our jeeps.especially with bigger tires

It seems you are trying to make up your mind how to setup your jeep. If you tell us where and how you see yourself using it realistically now and in the future we can give much better recommendations. What tire size eventually?Jeeps are like legos or ar15s-you can get lost in the combinations

Honestly I just like reading and thinking about this stuff. I can't imagine any 4x4 with at least 8 inches of ground clearance would be inadequate for my needs. But ya never know.

As of now I'm pretty well inclined to just regear, add a rear Truetrac and 32's, and a winch. I have a Warn Powerplant already.

If the 4.0 takes a crap I will look into the stroker deal more closely, but the last thing I want is to break down in a remote area. So realistically, a stroker or forced induction just increases the chance that something goes wrong, and the stock 4.0 will do anything I ask of it.

Yep,bench racing can be fun

For 32s I'd run 3.73 axles from marketplace or craigslist. 4.10 would let you grow to 33s though and have an optimum ratio for the 32rh.
