I just finished up the rebuild and JB SS SYE install on a spare NP231 I picked up on Facebook. Couple of random dumb questions:

- Would it be a bad idea to fill it with fluid now (I capped the breather) to check for leaks before I install on? Bonus points for not having up get messy doing it later after installed.

- Did I already miss the boat for installing one of those fancy pants clear sight glasses to keep an eye on the fluid level and condition?

- This one will be hard to say with any certainty, but reference drive shaft length, would going from a standard SYE to a SS SYE be enough of a dramatic difference in length that I couldn't even daily drive it for a week or two while I wait on a new shaft from Tom Woods to show up? Not sure how much spline is usually left. I think the difference between the SYEs is about 3"?

Thanks all!

You can daily drive with the rear driveshaft off.

Just 4H and you can go. I wouldn’t be a speed Desmond, and go easy on right turns, just a recommendation, not 100% necessary.

If you’re filling, having it on the Jeep is how inknow when it’s full, it runs out, so I waited when I put my JB Super Short on.

Don’t know about the glass look in, no need to over think that is my opinion. That stuff can go a long time, why watch it is my thought.

You could fill it now with the amount in the specs then check when in the vehicle. You could also overfill a bit then pull the plug when reinstalled and let the excess drain out.

Now that I think about it, I may have done this. Dam, I’m just 51 and forgetting crap did 6 months ago, ha.

Now that you say it, I may have done this exact thing. I also used a piece of rubber glove and rubber band on breather tube so it didn’t leak out if I turned it until it was mounted.

Wait 5 years, if you think the memory is bad now.

demon, ha. I'm leaving that in the post, dam iphone spell check.

*damn

😁

Thanks guys. The main point of filing it is to check for leaks before install. I'll do it now on the bench and double check the level after install. Sight glass probably isn't needed. Just looked neat I guess. I'm mod-happy in general. I wonder if they make one of those clear fill plugs in that size though. Anybody know the size/thread of the plugs?

And on the drive shaft thing, I've driven it in FWD before. It's weird but yeah, can't really use that as an excuse not to install it this weekend. Thanks all!

Just to close this loop;

I filled it up a couple of days ago to check for leaks before I installed it this morning. No leaks and I don't see any downside. Would recommend.

I skipped the sight glass idea totally.

The former driveshaft is not even remotely long enough to run even on a temp basis. FWD works as expected though.

You crazy kids…

Oh, and another FYI, 4.10s and metric 33s are bang on correct for the speedo with this kit on my '98.

Same with mine. Speedometer is fairly accurate up until about just before 60 mph. Starts to trail off there. Then I just go by GPS on my in-dash touchscreen to know exactly how fast I am going. When I am worried about posted speed limits that is…

I haven't had one since 2009 when I left Japan (the first time). Mine was an R32 body style and those came in different flavors. All were RWD except GTRs which were AWD but could be RWD with the pulling of a single fuse 😎 Mine was a heavily worked over GTSt which is RWD. I was making a little north of 600hp.

And even Japanese people make fun of Honda guys who think they have race cars.
