The best mods

It always seems to be that most of the mall crawlers like to brag about their "armor" or "light upgrades"
But it really seems to be reality that the BEST mods we can do to our tjs are all unseen by searching on the surface. Things like CA's, SYE's, regearing, that gastank hack up to19gallon capacity, & all that steering stuff. I was thinking about this earlier today, and thought to myself. I'm not going to spend another dime on crap for the outside of my jeep until I get everything under the skin the way I want it.

What are your thoughts on this?

I agree. I think the best mods are the ones under the surface.

I don't care for light bars or most of that bling, bling crap. Though I do like a nice set of wheels!

It’s one of those ‘to each his own’ things, but I do fall in your camp that the money oughta go where it helps performance rather than appearance, & some things do both; after almost 3 years of ownership I put my first mostly appearance related modification on in the form of a front bumper so it’s not an absolute rule for me. Some like to insist that ARB diff covers can only be added for appearance, I find that a silly charge. I guess they could be, but by no means necessarily.

And thankfully someone else has already invested in all the bumper / tub armor / Nerf bars so I don't have to haha.
Honestly the only exterior thing I really want to get is a new tire carrier. Factory spare mount + 33inches of rubber = not very safe.

Yeah I agree. I'd rather have everything under the Jeep and under the hood good to go before putting money into the exterior or the creature comforts on the inside.

Just do it all in whatever order makes you happy, you're going to eventually anyway. Don't worry about what other people think and you'll spend a lot less money. It's like saying you don't want a big dick because your little one works and at least your balls are big

I think the best mod on mine is the raised RC skidplate I put on it. With all the deep ruts we have on a lot of the trails here, it's really nice being able to slide over the ground instead of digging into it.

Very few people know I painted my oil pan red. Those 10 extra horsepower are dead silent until I unleash them on the non believers. Had to upgrade the brakes because it. Scary sometimes.

I have to disagree when you play in the rocks a diff cover is just another piece of armor to protect things that you need to get home

the rear 44 arb diff has a low drain plug and a high fill plug, so you do not have to remove the cover as often...if that helps you think of it as functional.

Seat risers were in my top three favorite comfort mods until I did the Summit seat cushion. The risers are shelved.. literally. Half doors, heated seats and Bartacts round out the honors for comfort stuff.

Top mods for me, keeping in mind it a dual duty rig with most of the time being a daily driver.. B&M short shift, BMB brakes & re-gear. Lights... better is better than more. I've one set of aux lights forward (done before I got the Holley LEDs which f'ng rock) and two back. And anything I did to the tailgate which is all for camping.

I do have ARB diff covers... I just like the look.

If I started over with a stock TJ I would install a front locker and a hand throttle on day 1 and go wheeling on day 2.

I’m going to start out with one of the biggest mistakes human beings make is trying to look good. People do this in many areas of life. We are all guilty or have been.

The biggest problem is the motives underlying that.

If you will pay close attention you will notice most things that are done really well for the right reasons happen to look great too.

Enjoy your jeep. It’s yours... you can do whatever you want to do- And doing stuff to these things is a lot of the fun of owning them- They are Legos for adults.


But most people come to realize they’re spending a lot of money on things that just don’t stinking matter. Or that make it worse.

If you’re going to drive the thing you need to make sure it works for what you use it for.

It needs to be dependable and safe.

If you stick with it, you really can have it all.

I can just about guarantee if you’re just starting with one of these that before you’re done what you really want to have is not going to be what you think you want to have right now.

I have a front locker that I'm going to install "real soon now" when the weather cools off - looking forward to it - but I agree about the hand throttle. Best thing EVER!
