See how it does after you correct the pitman arm. If the excess play it still there, there are likely worn joints or a worn steering gear.
A steering test will tell you a lot. Have someone turn the steering wheel stide to side between 10 and 2 o'clock repeatedly. I pefer the engine to be running. Feel every connection with your hand. Steering links, track bar, ball joints, etc. Everything should be tight.
