Transmission temp question

I was thinking the other day... When my Jeep went into limp mode a few months ago, one code was a possible overheating transmission (ending up being an input speed sensor but that's beside the point). Does this then mean that there is a temp sensor already in the transmission if it's able to throw codes like that?

With that being said, instead of welding a temp sensor into the pan couldn't you electronically find out what the temp is and have it shown to you on a screen rather than a dial/gauge? I could be thinking about this totally wrong but thought I'd ask.

My understanding of the 42RLE is that there's a thermistor integrated into the range sensor. This is how the PCM reads transmission temp. You can't connect a temp gauge to the circuit but some scanners will display transmission temp by communicating with the PCM.

Todd at aeroforcetech.com says his Interceptor SR gauge will access the 42rle temp but I haven't been willing to cough up the $250 to find out yet.

Interesting, I remember my mechanic telling me my trans temp at one point and I was very curious if anyone’s done any kind of set up like that before.

It just plugs into the OBD2 port. I really like having all of the different info it provides.

I recall a recent thread where people where questioning how someone got the transmission temp from the PCM. They said they were using Trail Dash 2. My interest ended when I saw the price.

Mine came with the original trail dash. I was mainly pointing out, that you can get the trans temp from computer, but it's at hottest point. My trans temp could be 210, but my Derale trans cooler doesn't kick on. So it's way hotter at that point in trans, and the fluid is not as hot as the trans temp.
