Upgraded battery cables?

There have been a few discussions about cables. The only difficult section is the fuseable link to the alternator and even that is available if you look around. It's five cables and two clamps. For people that really hate measuring things I can see there is value in the set. I think Jeep Cables make a set too but they use a fuse instead of a fusable link.
 
Jerry, why do you only want no larger than 4 guage? Thought the finner that copper wires and then heaviest gauge would always be the most desireable

Once a gauge is big enough to do the job with a sufficient safety margin there's no benefit to going bigger. A 4 gauge is already bigger than is needed, that's why I suggested there's no benefit to going even bigger. The battery cables don't have to support a winch either since winches have their own cables that connect directly to the battery.
I used these based on age-old recommendations from the legendary JeepHammer on a CJ forum to use welding cable if possible. Had them in about a year, zero issues.

Welding cable uses finely stranded copper to make them more flexible to be easier to use by welders. There's no benefit using that significantly more expensive welding cable for battery and starter cables since its added flexibility is really not needed or beneficial in that application. Regular stranded copper cable is still flexible enough and fine for that use.

The more strands in a wire the less resistance thru the wire.
While technically true the difference is insignificant in this application.

The difference in ohms of resistance for 1000' of 8 gauge stranded wire, for example, is only .06 ohms between 49 strands of 25awg vs. 133 strands of 29awg. That's .06 ohms (way less than one ohm) difference for 1000' with the only difference being the number of strands.

For the longest run of 5-6' of cable from the battery to the starter there's no significant difference in resistance between stranded and finer stranded welders cable. And while those numbers are for 8 gauge stranded cable the resistance difference percentages would be very close for four or six gauge.

When I purchased my '01 Sport 4.0L the Jeep had the original battery cables and clamps. The battery cables insulation had shrunk revealing several inches of copper wire and the clamps could not be tightened due to cracks in the lead clamps.
Built my own using 4 ga fine stranded cables, split wire loom, military battery clamps and fusion terminals.

Two more considerations that can be both pros and cons. The finer strand is a little more flexible and the larger strand is more formable. In my shop, I stock "welding" cable, which is the fine strand version, so that is usually my go to. Not long ago, I bought an actual battery cable and noted how easy it was to shape and keep out of harms way.

I highly recommend these guys as well. I ordered them with international shipping to Canada. USPS lost the first package and then the second. They were awesome to deal with and ended up shipping a third package with a different carrier.
