Upper rear shock mounting point: How dangerous is this?

While cutting off the nuts for the area where the rear shocks are mounted, I sliced a bit into the frame.

I want to know how dangerous it is to ride around like this, and get some advice on what to do to repair it with welding: whether tack welding a few washer in that area, or perhaps a plate would be fine.

The shock bolts would be resting on top of this Rear Bar Pin Flag Nut Kit as well which might reinforce and distribute some of the load

I'm not sure it's dangerous only because if the shock fails you'll be riding on the spring. All that's gonna do is be one hell of a bumpy ride.

You can't weld anything there until you take care of that rust. Once you do you should be able to weld a plate there and take care of it.
 
I'd definitely get metal up there. My experience on my last Rubicon trip was ripping my shocks out of the upper mount. All you need is one bolt to fail.

The shocks retain the springs in factory configuration.

So when I lost a shock and I articulated the spring popped out. I should have made a limiting strap. I didn't until later.

I popped the spring back in several times until the bump stop extension also ripped off. Then the driver side track bar mount came up a guillotined the fuel line and wiring.

You're right to be concerned and spend some time fixing the problem.

My solution was to outboard my shocks. But that's another video...

Don't be distracted by people promoting their YouTube channel with information that is irrelevant to you.

This is most likely a non issue. As long as the bolt is correctly torqued so that the bolt is clamping the bar pin against the frame crossmember.

thanks man, I will probably have to go with this for getting the jeep up for some errands this weekend. hopefully in a few weeks ill start my derusting project and revisit this area

Has anyone come across a video or documentation of someone actually putting in a plate over that spot? It's a bit inside the frame. How would one go about this without cutting holes in the floor to access from above

No, but welding can solve a lot of problems.

Some use the BP Kit you mentioned.

If you have a body lift it’s possible to reach over the frame into the area above the shock mount to get nuts started. Others try to sneak them in from below. Others outboard. Theoretically you could weld a plate with a hole in it above with nuts welded on it or tap a thicker piece. A million ideas. I’d just sneak some nuts in from above the frame.
