What’s your recipe for an all-around Jeep TJ?

Depends on the end goal and tire size. If you can figure out a 103ish wheelbase on a TJ, then it becomes a nice platform for 37s. 37" and larger calls for an LJ.

Agree with that but if you have axles for 37’s you likely have axles for 40’s and the LJ is better sized to take advantage of 40’s.

Whoah! Mind sharing details on that failure?
We run a currie correctlync and feel pretty good with 35’s and a gentle driving style. Hadn’t even considered the steering box sector/pitman shaft shearing off.

The Mercedes steering gear found on 03-06 TJs has a bit of a history of breaking at the sector shaft where the earlier Saginaw boxes did far less so.

I think you can achieve as much or more with a TJ done right.

Ya'll have overlooked the single key aspect of the requirements that fully negate the TJ platform. He needs a JT on 35's. There is no normal rig that can be built as an all around anything if it also has to haul family. Neither work well with a back seat.

I'd like to think so but I'm not convinced yet. Wheeling with @Apparition and his LJ is always interesting to me. I think his lift is similar to mine and we both have short arms and 35s. I'm sure its just the driver but that extra wheelbase seems like way more of an advantage than anything the loss of breakover and extra rear overhang take away. I wonder what 6-8 inches of stretch would do to help my TJ narrow the gap.

There are definitely positives and negatives to each.

I’ve seen where 6” left lets a TJ walk up but stops an LJ. 6” the other way reverses the capabilities.

There is a very real balancing act between tire size, frame height and wheelbase. Wheelbase creates stability and belly height creates ground clearance. The wheelbase numbers typically mentioned seem to follow roughly 66" between tire faces as a minimum. 35" tire + 66" face to face = 101" wheelbase. Frame heights start at about 21-22" with 35s and follow the subsequent increases in tire size.

Combine all that will good shocks, sway bars, gearing, automatic, steering, brakes, & control arm geometry and everything starts to compliment and work together into something approaching transcendent to drive, operate, and maneuver.

Can u talk more about this? What is needed? Stretched rear axle, LCOG build, etc? (Assuming a 34-35” tire, or maybe 37’s max?)

For a 35" tire you need a stretch to the 101-103" range, midarm, outboarded shocks, everything under that is assumed. No LCOG.

We've derailed from the OP's query. I thought to add something related to family, but a TJ or LJ would look like...

My idea of a LCoG build wouldn't have much affect on the costs involved.

Yeah, because you’d be moving shock mounts, cutting deep into the tub, and other innumerable changes.

I was thinking of folks who want to do 35s on stock axles, a budget boost, bump stops, and aftermarket fenders then call it a LCoG build because don't want to spend the $ to do it right.

Sometimes it is difficult to reconcile the catch phrases people use as a smokescreen for cutting corners with just cutting corners.
